Whitby Psych Losing Ground...

new to the forums...

Wanted to update, Whitby Psych is almost all lost. As of my last visit on Dec 3 the big tower is all but gone, remaining was 4 buildings in the North East corner. (Power plant, Laundry, Storage, and Machine Shop I believe) Besides the 2 cottages set aside. With everything pretty much removed, the power plant was the only building with overly interesting equipment. Its also too bad the basements were all flooded.

I've been exploring in many places before, but this was my first real excursion under the premise and title of UE and totally blew me away!! The experience I had in those buildings was phenomenal, tons of great pictures too. I am just sorry to see such an intriguing piece of culture eaten by urban sprawl and even worse by an anticlimactic subdivision.

I was kind of turned off by the 2 (seemingly) meth heads shovelling bits of glass and metal with their hands and dumping it into the flooded basement...but more intrigue to the outing i guess! (sorry if that was anyone here ha)

Aiming for some new sites, maybe you'll hear or see me again soon.

I know how you feel, the Psych was also my first real UE mission, and i'll miss it. Lots of good memories though.

WPH was my first exploration in Canada. I went there with Av, RW, NB, Boffo, Bob, and Conundrum back in May of this (2005) year and was actually was of the last people they took a "offical" trip with to WPH.

I never got the chance to get inside. Maybe in a few years time when they've completed whatever they're going to do with the property and the remaining buildings. I'm sure it would be interesting to be a construction worker on the project in the aftermath of the old hospital....never know what you'll dig up or come across.

That room, that writing on the wall is actually my buddy J-man. He got kicked out of his house and had no where else to go so he stayed in that room for those days, then my ex boyfriend and his mom went there and told him he could live with us. I find that actually funny, sorry, i'm sure no one else cares. He was all freaked out though because he could hear people go in and out of the building everyday and night, among other creepy noises in the nights. Ha, poor guy. lol I know i couldn't and wouldn't be able to sleep there.

Edit: I wanted to add that in that room room as well it said jennifer mcminn, katie loves kyle, random drawings that jman drew...etc on the wall. Oh and the building was known as "building 1" floor 2. In the same room one of the windows was broken and there was a door leading out to the balcony with a chair on the balcony.
Wow, i remember that far back, weird. Pointless information....

I was never able to truly enjoy Whitby Psych. Got into UE after they'd started a lot of the demolition. =(

It was truly a UE epic, although there are still sites out there that are just as cool to explore!

*what was your most memorible experience in whitby Phyq?*

Going into the morgue in the basement of the main building! also the Cold Treatment centre was really creepy! and the EKG room on the left of the morgue.

Did anyone else get into that building just off the centre that was totally boarded up? where you had to crawl through the window on the east side just off the stairs. Did ever go into the basement? there was a workbench with a fridge in the room. Under the work bench me and my friend found that one of the bricks was lose in the wall (the brick was sticking out from the wall a bit). and In the space behind it we found a collection of Id tags. creepy caretakers!

Unfortunately I missed the hay-days of UE there...
I did enjoy climbing up to the roof of the Laundry Building and seeing a morbid looking baby doll up on an air vent near the latter. Anyone place it there?

Has anyone been back recently?
There wasn't much left when I posted this in Dec and wasn't looking too promising for the remaining buildings.

Nothing but rubble except for the two buildings they were going to save.

Oh, except the powerhouse and that other building beside it are still there, I think that's a different developer's land. I think the powerhouse would make a good rec centre for that neighbourhood, but then I'm a bit of a dreamer.

yep.

Oh man where do I start? LOL I was lucky...went through all of them pretty much....even ones close to the new psych that were not connected via tunnel...anybody remember the one with all the church crap? They had crosses on some of the doors and little nealing knee pad thingies along with bibles, etc.

I also liked the morgue. I was in it before it was too far trashed. I have a picture of me inside one of the fridges too LOL And rescued some of the brain scan papers...

The utility building near the more southern cottage was cool.....one spot had little rings built into the wall at a height that seemed convenient for chaining a person to the wall. Who knows.

I was always amazed with the number of little off rooms down in the tunnels that had furniture. The cottage bubble windowed rooms also intrigued me. I wish I had one of those doors.

Down in the tunnels in a chimney flute I found old paper pieces and a super old cig pack from likely the very early days. Also a few old coins in a hiding spot inside a cottage.

One little hiding spot had a large collection of buttons that I rescued. Imagine the person who hid them there over the years eh.

One hiding spot had a small painting somebody had made on a small piece of cardboard. Others held letters, post cards, candy wrappers, cig pack premium cards, playing cards, personal notes, etc.

The psych to me was all about the remaining hidden relics and the connection of history to them. I will never forget my trips there, nor the cool people I met while looking around the rooms.

I remember looking at the pictures of Whitby Psych and thinking this place surreal.

When I did go there, my feeling of surealness was 2 times as strong than seeing the photos. Its one of those places you can't beleive that at one was active and then abandoned.

Seeing the pictures posted here made me kind of sad. Working there when the place was active was a real experience that I am very lucky to have had with the funny and the sad memories I have of this place. Something of a bitter sweet feeling here. Hard to explain.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

I spent many years partying at the Whitby Psych. Always bringing different groups of friends to check the place out. I remember one building that was close to the road had jars, what we made up it to be fetus' inside them.

The first time ever going to the Psych i went into the building with the morgue. I was walking down the stairs and i remember looking up at the top stairs and seeing a bat and got all freaked out. When we went to the morgue someone there had paintballed inside one of the drawers but i was never able to find it after that day.

I also have searched through the tunnels but i get claustrophobic very easy so we didn't go too far from building building. I came to the conclusion about the random rooms in the tunnels that they were for the workers getting away from the patients and for when the patients are being really bad or violent. lol
