|  | | | The Mayor of Toronto in my opionion is selling us out. Many small things I've noticed about his leadership have gotten on my nerves. But most importantly to me is the sellout of our public space.
Now not saying that it was ever good in Toronto. But has anyone else noticed the over population of advertising in our city. It seems that any flat surface is covered in it, from bus shelters, to taxis, to entire sides of buildings. It is especially bad now with those gigantic new garbage can ads. As well as the plastering of bus shelters outside the normal "advertising space".
Now I don't want to sound like a mass marketer myself. But appealing to the community here, many of whom are devout to our urban landscape, do what you cant to stop this before it gets tottaly out of hand. You can start at the links below:
EDIT: In retrospect I should have posted this in the Other forum as it is infact not UE. Also I should have made it public and forgot, damn that tickbox is too small. But then as the Other forum is L3 only that defeats the purpose.

These trashcans are only a part of the problem. In this city graffiti is buffed over, walls aee used only for banners, stickers, billboards etc. Everything is either buffed or plastered with ads.

| | | | The NE corner of Yonge/Dundas is an embarrassment. It was once to become an entertainment complex, with a huge AMC theatre and, I think, A Virgin Megastore, among other stores. Now it sits for another year as a hole in the ground, as guarded by boards with big, ugly ads. Not sure if it's the city's land or what but the city is allowing these huge hideous ads to remain. It looks horrible. I'm not sure what's more embarrassing - that NE corner with the ugly ads and plywood boarding, or the SE corner that used to be occupied by vibrant businesses (including a great downtown location of Licks) but is now simply a concrete roof to the underground parkade...

Now, the bus shelter ads, those do. I hate sticking my head out of the shelter to look for the bus. Maybe this is why Whiby Transit doesn't have bus shelters..

Yea, the same thing really pisses me off too, and it's not even winter yet.
Just wait for that, when buses go right past people because the combination of salt residue and "listerine orange" makes the shelters just short of opaque.

I would rather be able to see whats going on outside the bus shelter than have to sit and stare at an ugly listerine or hair products add.

(Toronto DOES have strict laws on ads around the city but all it takes is a simple variance and the ad goes up. [check the Toronto Public Space Commitee site that is linked above if you care to know more.])
Incidently I am also a member of the aforementioned group (TPSC)

In my personal opinion I think that it is entirely pointless to plaster everything in ads. I know, money is money, but there is a line that has been crossed by the city offering practically every variance.
Come on now, how complex can you make a garbage can.
I think a simple 'RECYCLABES/GARBAGE' container would be much better suited to our city where many people are already too lazy to use one in the first place.
