You should seriously take a look at the link I posted a few responses back for the Billboard Liberation Front. They've been artistically modifying California billboards for well over a decade. I haven't been on their site for a while, but they used to have technical instructions on how to 'liberate' billboards, and they've got tons of examples on their site.

yep.

Reminds me of something I saw in California once. there was one of those benches with the ad as the backboard that had a girl model of some sort in a black dress from the side and well the end of the skirt where you would see the gal's underwear someone drew a big penis sticking out and put a arrow with the words "PENIS" obviously pointing it out.

Ha. Dude, you should have taken a picture.
I like the small anti-ad stuff I see in the subway in Toronto. There was one that said "SLAVERY" but the V was the Nike symbol. There was another that said "Public Space". It's cool because they were put right on the plastic backing, so you could see them through the ads. Anyone know anything about them?

Well, with respect to the TTC and cameras, their bylaw says you cannot take photographs and the like for commercial interests, but it dosent specifically say you can't do it for personal use.

That said, the TTC has had in place for awhile now a procedure that instructs any employee to report any suspicious behavior to security.

Personally, I think its a crock of shit to think that stopping people from taking pictures is going to somehow make the system safe from terrorists. Its all about perception. Anything the TTC can do to make little old ladies feel safe, they're going to do.

Realistically, IF there was going to be a terrorist acto committed on Toronto, odds are it won't be on the TTC. The intent behind the London attacks weren't to incite terror, rather to give a public demonstration that even after all the extra measures in place after the September 11 attacks, society is still defenceless to a well organized terror group. The reason London was targeted is because London prides itself in having the worlds most advanced CCTV network. That's proof in itself that nothing we do can stop a determined group.

Back to the TTC... If the TTC were to just take a neutral attitude to the terror "threat" (which in my opinion is bogus), the public wouldn't be too happy. They need to do something to make it appear that they are taking a proactive aproach to the goings on.

I for one, wouldn't let it stop me from taking pictures. Sure, a collector or operator might get horny and call security, but if you really aren't up to no good, what's the concern? They'll ask a few questions, just show them the pictures and produce your I'd and you'll be on your way. Most likely, they'll enter your name into their database so if it ever happens again, they'll have proof that you're legit...

Unit calling radio say again?

Have you taken a look at the downtown stretch of yonge lately? especially around the eatons centre. We're starting to look like mini-new york with all of the huge, obtrusive advertisements, and flashing screens.

I think, for safety's sake, they should put some sort of restriction on the screens facing the road. It's too easily to be distracted by them, and with people constantly cutting across the road assuming everyone will stop for them, it doesn't seem smart.

The other night I went on a walkabout around that area. I was under the influence of certain mind-altering smokables, and it gave me some strange insight. I truely is scarring when you begin to notice this kind of stuff. I wrote down a little next to Roy Thompson Hall with a sharpie ( <- there is advertizing!). See if you can find it! BWAHAHAH!

One of the other campaigns the Public Space Committee was running last year (and I would assume is continuing this year) is against City Hall's postering ban -- last year a law was tabled to ban postering on hydro poles. So while the City is permitting more and more space to be sold off to the highest bidder; they're telling local promoters, people with lost pets (etc.) that there isn't a forum for them to get their message heard.
I don't understand why the city allows corporations to put up ads that are an eyesore, or even hazardous (like the bus shelter ads; TV ads on the Gardiner); but won't let the public advertise for free on a grassroots level because staples rust.

Exactly. Viacom can have you killed and get away with it. Money talks, ethics walk.
