Well put Normz, that idea was proposed by staff to council but for unknown reasons the Eucan Ecomupis (The really big garbage cans) pilot was approved instead (Yes, the pilot that they are using to have ads on it...) From being at the information seminars at metro hall on the specific topic of the Eucan bins, I believe (this is from memory) that the city is looking to have somewhere around 5000 garbage / recycling bins in the GTA (Current number is around 3000). With the currently proposed offered, Eucan will pay for 2500 of the bins to be placed around, with the city paying for the rest.

Yes, it is math-tastic

Anyways, this issue will hopefully be solved soon. As the current contract with OMG media expires in 2008.

I thought this photo might be relevant. I took this on Spadina around Richmond.

I just thought it was crazy how you can stand in the shadow of an advertizement. And yeah, I'm beginning to feel a little overwhelmed taking the TTC with the ads. Especially those aweful TBS and Bose iPod decks.
This might be something interesting to explore. Maybe we should start putting up ads while exploring.

I agree !!!

Avatar and myself had a professional video camera and we were just goofing around having fun, interviewing random people asking them odd questions pointless questions... at 1 am in the morning on a saturday night.

we were walking around dundas square and mainly we were staying on the sidewalk, however we got harrassed more then once that we wern't allowed to film on the square itself... we were harrassed even when we had finished filming and were walking through the square with the camera packed away.

that is kind of obsurd.

The corner is not only wretched for how it looks but how security hastles EVERYONE passing through.

Interesting links, usually I don't mind ads in public spaces, as long as they don't go overboard, like they did here:

Over the top advertising like that is just the advertising world's response to the fact that consumers have become jaded and traditional advertising no longer works. they keep going bigger and more impressive but what really needs to change is the message. I'm going to stop here before this turns into an advertising rant. But that's why these things crop up.

It's okay, as soon as the Zombie outbreak comes, all of our advertizing will be an ironic commentary of our species' hollow existence.
Plus, we are the people who know all the crazy places to hide out from zombies.

I know what yuo mean, subway stations like union and that other one (I think it was St. george or something) have been plastered with Global or canadian idol.

And after baseball's failure in the 90's (hehehe) the Union station skywalk has becoming one big ad zone. iPod and tire ads

Roadwolf, it's a public place and people should be allowed to film or take pictures there. But then security is always overworrying about something or other ("hey you, no looking at City hall. Keep movin' along...")

Man, we should just raid a bunch of ads. Everyone in one day, just go nuts with some markers and whatnot in busy stations.

actually what they told us is that you need a permit to film there and you need to pay money to the city to get a permit.

I was a student in Radio and Television Broadcasting in Kitchener and one morning, sitting in the mall with my camera and tripod, having a coffee before going to school I got harassed by security because I wasn't even allowed to have the camera in the mall... it was still in the case. Some places get ridiculously freaked out about cameras.

That's interesting. They're so forward in saying that they have something to hide. What's also funny is that people just let them take that control. Does anyone else feel, in general, that everyone else in the world is so disturbingly under control? I guess the idea of UEing is kinda already opposed to that.

I dare you to take a camera on a TTC bus, bus/subway station or or subway. I was at the Dundas subway station and took a few shots of the subway as it came in from the free area (before you need to pay to go further) and the lady in the collectors box freaked out on me, yelling and screaming. I simply ignored her and took a few more shots before going topside to Yonge & Dundas.

Yea you gotta watch out for that kinda stuff, esp. the subway. Probably high-strung with all the security and terrorist threat stuff. Even if you ask for taking photos they'll prob. say no (at least the subways...buses, streetcars etc are more leanient)

There's a difference between the subway and most other places. The TTC is a target should terrorists ever do something here, so I don't blame them for being high-strung about cameras. Especially in the wake of what happened in London 6 months ago.

Since when do video cameras have ANYTHING to do with terrorist bombings like the London Subway bombing? Video cameras don't blow up...

If a terrorist wanted to detonate a bomb in the Toronto Subway, security hassling people for video cameras won't do a THING to stop it. Even if you are trying to insinuate that "the terrorists" use video cameras to scope out a location before bombing it, is there any proof that has been done before?

What would potential terrorists even gain from video footage? "Well.. there's the subway train we're gonna blow up...". They can just look around and remember stuff instaed of drawing attention to themselves with video cameras. If they want pictures, they can use google images. Heck if they're really organized, I'm sure they can pull up blue prints and shit. If people on here can find blue prints to various things, imagine what a funded group of terrorists could do.

Security measures like hassling people for taking pictures, or possesing a video camera does NOTHING to stop terrorism and only inconveniences law-abiding citizens.

And it makes the general public feel a false sense of safety. But face it no matter how many locks or how big the locks are on your bike, if someone really wants to steal it, they will.

Or say you get a bunch of foreign looking people come on the subway and talk about something in a language no one can understand. Could be about where to put a bomb to do the most damage, or could be talking about how they got the newest Bon Jovi cd for $9.99 at Wal-mart. Much to the same effect there. what can you do

Keep it fuzzy.

Yes. There's one (semi-vandalized, I think) at Queen's Park and College, right by the subway entrance that isn't covered.

The Original text on the Listerine bottle says "Cool Citrus Listerine Kills Germs" and the vandalized one at Queens park used to say "UNcool Citrus Listerine Kills Public Space". Then someone smashed the bottle, and it was held together with tape for a while..Then it got smashed more and eventually just got taken down completely, thankfully.

Oh man that's awesome. I'm seriously considering some kind of artistic approach to killing ads. We should seriously hit a bunch of ads in one day.
