Central Florida.

Hi guys,

I live in Orlando, and I have a couple of ideas about places in Central Florida. There are a whole bunch of abandoned theme park type places.

I've always had a kooky fascination with old abandoned theme parks. Splendid China went out of business some time last year or so. I don't know if the old Boardwalk and Baseball stadium is still around. Watermania in Kissimmee is closing soon. Someone here mentioned Xanadu the 'Home of the Future' I was actually there last year and took a couple of pictures. Mostly outside since I really wasn't prepared to do any exploring. Pretty interesting. Anyone down in South Florida ever been to the old Parrot Jungle site?

I got hooked on Action Squad some time ago courtesy of Fark. It doesn't seem like MaxAction has the time these days to update the site though. That site still rocks!

Most of those places are pretty left to vandals now , and extensive "Photography" and documentation is recorded about the places after their closing on the internet you just need to look around more .

I live in CFL also but most of the time to explore places I head towards st augustine etc if I already know the targets.

There are several large closed places like a power station etc , and some old "secret" places in apopka .

Mostly its run down houses that have not been touched with weird things in them.

Sorry I can't give locations on anything , Just look hard enough you will find them , Most of the churches in the middle of the woods with no roads to them etc I have found using terra maps etc.

I like to ride seatless bicycles.

I'll be in the area pretty soon, but only for a weekend. Do you happen to know of any quick, easy, picturesque locations I might want to visit?

Also, where exactly is this Parrot Jungle place? Sounds interesting.

I was just mentioning on another thread that I've heard the water tower in Sarasota is cool. And I've been in tunnels at New College a few times myself. Send me a PM if you want a little more detail, but that should be enough info for you, with a little research.

Oh, I also just remembered some other stuff... Look along Rt. 610 and down the sidestreets. I didn't get to fully explore but I remember seeing an abandoned-looking orange farm, broken carnival rides sitting in a field, and some other interesting stuff.

The airport can be fun too. Some kids like to go behind the waterfall, and I found an open door to a aquarium maintenance room there once.

I've only been around northern Sarasota, to a few houses, gas stations, and apartment buildings. PM me if you'd like any exact locations, though I haven't come across anything really interesting, unfortunately.

I could be wrong but there was another developer who just picked up where Parrot Jungle left off. They basically opened a parrot Jungle knock off on the same site.

Xanadu - Gone

Boardwalk and Baseball - Almost completely obliterated, but its been that way for a while. I drove by a couple weeks ago on the way to orlando and I saw nothing and some construction going on. The construction has hit a roadblock as of 12/16 though, with insufficient sewer and water capacity.

Splendid China - Demolished according to the LDB.

Bok Tower - Hopefully they have gotten done with the renovations and repairs from the hurricane, but I haven't been by it in quite some time. Well, at least closer than the 10+ miles of 60 through Haines City.

There are some abandoned industry and whatnot around, but better see it quick because development is moving at a breakneck pace in central florida (Tampa -> Orlando).

I've been in tunnels at New College a few times myself.

I just remembered that I've got a friend whose mom works at New College...perhaps that'll gain me access to a few interesting places?

The old Sarasota High building is pretty interesting, but I doubt there's an easy way in. I got in about four years ago when it was still partially open to the public, and I'm considering trying to get back in.

And I've just recently discovered, in Venice [just south of Sarasota for those who don't know], a circus, empty for about ten years, that's quite fascinating and definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

On another note, has anyone here been to Sunland, in Tallahassee? I'm thinking of planning a trip there for late March, and I'd like to organize it so we can see some other abandoned sites in Florida along the way. Ideas are appreciated; in fact, if this trip ends up happening, anyone here is welcome to come along with us.

Just got back from a trip down there. Vandals have had their way with the place... entrances galore. Lots of spray paint, broken glass, etc. No ghosts so far as we can tell, though there are plenty of websites to tell you otherwise. It's important to note that this building is caddy corner to the Florida Law Enforcement Center. Provided you aren't stupid, it shouldn't be a problem though. The old specimen storage building across the street is in similar condition. Anyways, here are some pics of what you have to look forward to.

We didn't manage to access the upper floors of the front wing due to recent rain, but you might find interesting things there. Supposedly there are a pharmacy and an auditorium in those areas. Just watch your footing if you head that way.

Oh, and watch out for the elevator shafts. It's a long drop.

Not to burst your bubble, but that was a sink... we found quite a few of them. If you check some of the older sites, they have pictures of them in use. It's for communal use by disabled individuals. Still, it is pretty bizarre.

Splendid China is pretty much dead in the water. Last time we were there earth was being moved and some of the last pieces from the auctions were being taken out. I'd be amazed if anything was left. It's been about 8 months since our last trip there. What a fun place it was though...

Also Twin Peaks Resort is gone as wel as The Great Movie Ride, Mazing Place and I think the old "Haunted Mansion" on 192 has been ravamped too. Although I'm not 100% on that. Also in the area...Florida Bible was half demo'd last time I saw it.

I have a new place on my radar. The closed Delta Resort near Universal. Looks like security abandoned the place much as the guests and employees did about 2-3 years ago. Anyone have any insight?

I know of the old Hyatt down at the intersection of 192 and I-4 is there - there are ways to get in easily and only an old man guarding the front 'gate' with a golf cart.

As far as I know the Delta has security. It was one of the possible locations for SEXFEST back in '04. Although with the probability of all the doors being locked and the pesky guards we scrapped it. Granted I haven't seen it now for about 8 months. Has the situation changed there?
