| | | | A thought about camouflage: < on 6/7/2005 12:53 AM >
| | | I was just thinking, as I changed out of blue jeans and a red t-shirt into brown corduroys and a black t-shirt for the purpose of exploring tonight, has anybody ever been in a situation where camouflage has saved them from being caught? I never get intense and decked out into woodland or urban camo or anything, but I'm sure someone must have a story. For example, have you ever been spotted by authorities of some kind, dived into a pile of brush, wearing camo fatigues, and had them walk straight past you because you blended in so well? Just curious.

| | | Daylight, I was 15-16, my friend and I sat back againt a fence camo face painted. Four people not more 2 feet from us looked in vain at our half covered bodies and the BDU's we were wearing. Although we had quickly covered are legs in pine straw and broken a branch to hide behind it was pretty shabby. Long story short we had 5 people look at us, while they looked for there golf ball. No I didnt take there golf ball, but it was fun not getting caught.

| | | In my younger years we used to play manhunt in the woods behind a school. In the middle of the night you can imagine the police weren't always thrilled about this. I was wearing black cargos and a jacket and jumped into a hill side of ivy as they flashed their spot lights and some how they didn't see me.

The Darkness is coming...
| | | Re: A thought about camouflage: <Reply # 5 on 6/7/2005 2:57 AM >
| | | A couple friends and I were playing some obscure form of hide and seek. All players searched for the one person, while the one person tried to make it to a designated safe spot. I was the person hiding. I ran around the corner and saw two people guarding the safe spot. I had no moves at all so I jumped clear over some large shrubs that separated the amphitheater from the parking lot and dove into some cedar shrubs. They ran past me 3-4 times before they finally noticed me ducking under the shrubs. Still, I lost the match because they wouldn't stop guarding the safe spot... Bastards... -Me!

| | | I've avoided railroad police twice, thanks to camouflage. The first time, a pair of railroad cops were guarding the scene of a derailment, and spotted me walking on the tracks. They chased me through the woods for a ways... I sprinted uphill a short distance, and sat down between some trees & boulders. They walked right past me. The second time, I was checking out an abandoned railroad bed near an active railroad bridge over the New River. Apparently, it's not a good idea to park your truck right by the end of a railroad trestle. Withing minutes, the railroad police cruised by on the tracks, checking to see if anyone was on the bridge. They passed within ten feet of me (I was standing up, just inside the edge of the woods), but didn't see me. edit: Woohoo!!! My 500th post! [last edit 6/7/2005 4:01 AM by tick - edited 1 times]

| | | I've had security searching for me and hidden with camo gear on, and had them within 5-10 feet and not find me. Just as helpful is how camo can help you stay undetected in the first place though. But, just because you put on some camo, does not mean you can't be found, stealth is often more important than hiding. I've also been through several police roadchecks with a few people in the car, all in camo, and not had a question asked...

| | | I know I have been spotted because of the lack of it. Some of the new digital camo patterns look like they might be pretty effective. It really messes with the eye and should work in more environments than military type woodland or civilian Real Tree etc.

| | | Most of the time I find that the best camo is the clothing of the locals. Hiding in plain sight if you will. Camo just looks suspicious most of the time. Blending in works better. I suppose if you're infiltrating a military base, camo would work both ways though.

| | | Because this discussion has happened ohhh I dunno, about a bazillion times, I'll just outline a couple of relevant things. 1. Camo worn to keep yourself from being detected by security while you sneak up to a place that has foliage is good. 2. Camo worn while you're wandering around a place suspiciously in the open and then try to make up some stupid story about why you're there, not good.

| | | I'm sure it can go both ways. If you are not caught because you are wearing camo, good for you, thumbs up! If you are caught wearing camo, hiding from security, good luck explaining why you are running around like you are a Splinter Cell.

| | | Main thing I have noticed, and is illustrated very well above, is remaining still is the number on way not to be seen. I have been in someone's backyard and had them look out the window, in daylight, and not been seen because I did not move. Movement attracts the eye, being still does not. Don't be obvious and you won't be seen ;)

| | | The factors involved in remaining unseen are... Movement Colour Shape Remaining still removes the detection of movement. Camouflage, if properly chosen for the terrain, will reduce/remove the color variation. It will also, through the distortion of pattern, break up the physical form the human brain associates with a person. To use camouflage to your advantage, you need to understand those basic principles. Wearing camo that doesn't match your surroundings is little better than wearing any other type of clothing. Also be aware that your face, if uncovered will reflect light really really well and is easily seen against a darker background. And of course if you can't remain silent, your camouflage isn't going to help a hell of a lot...

| | | it also helps to have black camo if at night if your in the woods laying down on the stomach when it dark outside and it helps with being inside hiding in a closet when a guard opens the door with you being up at the opposite wall
