I'm in Asheville-

Has anyone ever investigated the big gated "thing" on Town Mountain Road? I know you can see a castle-like building on the mountain itself, and I think that's where the gated road goes to, but I know there's a fence around the property. I've been curious about that place ever since I moved here

The road with the gate that looks like it might belong to some sort of asylum (at least that's what I thought when I saw it) does in fact go to the castle. It's called Seely castle, but the only info I can give you on it would come from this website: http://www.dupontc.../castles/seely.htm . I know that UNC Asheville was situated there for a while, and there's even an old aerial photo of the place from when it was the school in the lobby of the Founders Hall dorm. It seems really interesting, but it's inhabited and it looks like the current owners don't want visitors.

That website on Seely's castle "Overlook Mansion" is a pretty accurate account of the hearsay based around the building. The building was not brought over stone by stone from Scotland, and as far as I know there have been no satanic religious groups there. The building was the site of the Asheville-Biltmore College (UNCA) until the early 1960's. It was sold, because the land on the mountain wasn't big enough for the continued expansion of the school. The sale of the mansion helped to pay for the college's new site in North Asheville. I have seen the sale receipt (I've researched in the archive at UNCA.) and it was sold to a baptist group, I believe, but it may have been resold since then. It can also be found on the historical registry for building, and as of the present it is still owned and occupied by somebody. Hence the BIG FENCE. I am in the process of contacting the owners in the hopes of getting a tour.

Always listen to experts. They'll tell you what can't be done, and why. Then do it.

Pessimist by policy, optimist by temperament -- it is possible to be both. How? By never taking an unnecessary chance and by minimizing risks you can't avoid. This permits you to play out the game happily, untroubled by the certainty of the outcome. - Lazarus Long "Time Enough For Love"

Thanks a lot for the info on that castle... I've always wondered about it! If you do manage to get a tour, PUHLEAZE tell us all about it!

The website with info about the castle is really interesting! I never knew it was that big! It seems to be a mini Bitlmore, which is quite neat. It would be awesome to live there... although I know if it sold today it'd go for a LOT more than $400,000. Perhaps that's a good motivator to be rich....

ive also been accessing some great spots in greensboro. many are all in the same area. most recently we got into what used to be something like the biggest whorehouse in greensboro, the rose health spa. i found some info here http://thecrazyhip...in-greensboro.html

"Incidentally, there is a project in the works by the great people at the Greensboro Community Art Collective to buy and restore the building on Lee Street that used to house the Rose Spa (a thinly disguised house of ill repute)."

i got a few shots while there, i think theyre on my friends camera, ill have to get them. how we got in is almost laughable, but executed at upmost caution. we've also accessed the cotton mill square, the old jefferson pilot bldg downtown, this manufacturing place near the south end of battleground, the abandoned elementary school near the arboretum, and countless rooftops around the city.

A friend and I in Greensboro are always up for exploring new sites. We tried to get into that Rose Spa place before with no luck. It wasn't a good day for hoping fences. Thanks for the link, btw. I had no idea what the building used to be. Is the JPF building downtown empty now? I know they left but I thought someone else took it up. Have you been to the JPF "mansion" down near Jamestown? It was impressive. Oh and whats this school near the arboretum? I thought I saw a sign there for some historic school but I never saw anything besides what looked like an old barn in someones backyard nearby. I guess that could have been it but I haven't checked it out yet.

Has anyone heard of an old abandoned nursing home somewhere near winston-salem? I have heard rumours of it being off of a main hwy near there but the person who told me about it didn't remember exactly where it was.

Also I almost forgot I have heard that there is an abandoned RELIGIOUS amusement park somewhere in this state. I used to have this book called strange us and it had a bunch of interesting places to check out in Nc. Anyone know anything?

There's an abandoned nursing home in Lincolnton, but that's nowhere near W-S, sorry. Also, I'd love to see any religious theme park situated in the Bible belt. Let me know if you find out anything about it--I believe it would be very amusing. But sorry, I'm no help.

I'm semi-new to Charlotte (3 years) and haven't done any exploring here. I JUST found this site and would love to find/meet up with people who want to or know of places. I'm from NY and we used to check out old sanitariums and schools and what not. Please email if you are interested!!

maybe someone should try to set up a meet and greet thing for us NC uers?

So, let's do this. I don't know many locations to offer but I'd love to see some in the Charlotte area, OR I wouldn't mind traveling as long as it's within 150 miles of the Queen City. I'm not much of a leader but I would love to help organize/attend a meet-up for NC UEers!
