| | | The map probably doesn't need to be so big, and I'm not sure it needs to be right out in front like that either. Maybe you could tuck it away somewhere else? Most people should know where their regions are anyway without needing a this sort of thing to confirm it for them. Also, the amount of code that you've used to create this thing is kind of ridiculous. Why do you have to slice up the image like that? Just use a single image and draw rectangular imagemaps around the names of each area name. It'll be a lot simpler and'll cut down on the file size. It's the most important page and your sketchy code alone is taking up 100k+.

It can't be done with the read states icons as an imagemap. It had to be done the way Av did it to have the read state icons in there. And frankly, I think the way he did it was genius. I wouldn't have thought of it.

| | | The map is not disproportional -- it just happens to be the first ACCURATE map I found when I searched for Vectored Maps of North America on google. The rest of the world was also in the map but I cut out just north america. Wrabbit is right -- the map code has to be done that way. Considering that the map is a mere 110k of jpg's and 25k of code, I think it's quite a nice thing for only 135k (considering that the JPG of the map alone, as one piece, is 100k) P.S. The reason we decided we needed the map was because not all americans can agree on what states belong in what regions. "Mid-Atlantic" may be confusing to people. Just look back in the thread here to see how much arguing over the regions there was. The map makes it clear to everyone. -av [last edit 1/26/2005 12:56 PM by Avatar-X - edited 1 times]

| | | Posted by Mike Dijital So I like what Av did ALOT, but let give the credit to the map where it belongs.
|
I'm not claiming credit, but I'm sorry to say that the concept of using a map to indicate different geographic locations didn't originate on Ninj's site, or on any website. -av

Actually, if you look back in the history of this thread, you'll see someone else suggested the idea of a map.

| | | Not the map, anybody can do that :p I meant the way he put the working read states icons inside the map by breaking it up into all those smaller images. I wouldn't have thought of that.

I haven't tried, but with the current color scheme (which uses < 256 colors) you could probably save a few k's by saving the images as .gif instead of .jpg. Remember: JPEG for photo's, GIF for Graphics (Gif heavily compresses large areas of the exact same color, and lossless, while JPEG compresses on similar colors but is lossy, which shows very clearly in graphs but less in photo's) Tijmen But, kudo's to av!

If he had his own airplane, maybe It takes forever to drive anywhere up there because it's spread out over such a huge area. And there's pretty much no roads on the west half of the state (except in the individual cities), just the east half, so you have to fly anywhere you wanna go over there.
