| | | I think that the map is distorted because the lines of lattitude get father apart as you go farther from the equator to compensate for the roundness of Earth.
Sometimes, you need to march right in and demand your rights, even if you don't know what your rights are, or who it is you're talking to. Then, on your way out, slam the door. |

| | | No, Damien's right. This is the projection the current map is using: http://www.colorad...j/gif/mercator.gif The Mercator projection has straight meridians and parallels that intersect at right angles. Scale is true at the equator or at two standard parallels equidistant from the equator. The projection is often used for marine navigation because all straight lines on the map are lines of constant azimuth. For comparison, here's one that allows sizes to be more closely compared: http://www.colorad...oj/gif/polycon.gif The polyconic projection was used for most of the earlier USGS topographic quadrangles. The projection is based on an infinite number of cones tangent to an infinite number of parallels. The central meridian is straight. Other meridians are complex curves. The parallels are non-concentric circles. Scale is true along each parallel and along the central meridian. Now, I'm just putting this here for your edification -- I don't really care if the map is distorted as long as it works. | | | There are about 15 different "projections" for the earth. I have a National Geographic somewhere that shows them all. Honestly, it doesn't matter HOW Av does this; someone's going to have a complaint. The map is accurate. The locations are good enough.

I have to agree, but everywhere almost on the Atlantic Seaboard has a ton of stuff. I mean where would you put NY, PA and NJ then?
|
Gotta be Northeast. Only other option is Mid-Atlantic with the Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky, etc. A whole another region.

| | | Nice map, I like the new feature, but am I the only who's eyes are burned by the color of the ocean? Couldn't we make it a nice neutral grey like the rest of the page, or at least a less bright shade of blue?

| | | This works for me. I'm very happy to see the States finally split, although I do believe it was a United States idea. Av's work with the map and the quick turn around him updating this has encouraged me to finally send the tattered Canadian $5 bill I have sitting around from my last trip to Eh?Land, to Av. Asylunt

| | | Who cares about accuracy, we all (should) know what North America looks like. Not trying to key down canada or anything, but perhaps a more user friendly map would be beneficial for easy navigation. Since all the upper regions are hugely disproportional to the lower ones, a little perspective might work better...
just a suggestion.
