To summarize: Explore the synagogue.

It can't go any worse than this thread has.

I am Jewish. I see no problem with it. As long as you aren't intentionally disrupting the temple, especially the arc (where the torahs are kept) or anything like that, you should be fine. No risk of disrespect.

how the hell did i miss this thread? i need to read the rookie forum more often. this is hilarious.

but anyways, who cares. even if your god were to exist i don't think he's going to be upset with you for being curious and exploring a former place of your religions worship. your intentions aren't bad. unless you're a fucking copper thief or you're up to no good, then may you burn in your made up hell haha but no seriously go for it. its an abandoned building and i was raised to follow no faith but abandoned religious places are really cool so to find one of your own religion would be interesting. that is all i have to say.

Speaking of which, I think you can be fined if you rub your mezuzah in public.

Oh good, my slow clap processor made it into this thing.

Go. As long as you are respectful I see no issue.

The congregation is what was imbued with faith; the defunct temple is just a building (deserving of the same respect and light tread as any other we explore).

Go ahead, I think that you are the right person to explore because you care about it so much.

I never enter a building without knowing about it. I read up on it fully first to educate myself, and then I enter. I passed up several good opportunities to explore, simply because I didn't care about the property.

Just go explore it. You'll probably end up offending someone no matter what you do anyway.
The only thing that offends me, are people who get offended.

I argue against a lock. This needs to be fully discussed.

I feel that people should have a full understanding of what they are exploring before they enter the building. Or if the opportunity arises before they have researched the place, they should look it up afterwards.

For me urban exploration is less about "ooohhh... pretty chairs" and more about understanding what's there and why it is there.

After looking in the building, you should stop by the cemetery and pay tribute to the congregants who at one point worshiped and met in that synagogue which you explored every Saturday. And at the very least you should have an understanding of what each of those people contributed to the community around them.

I'm not Jewish, but I'm pretty sure that once it is abandoned, it is no longer a synagogue; it is a building that used to be a synagogue.

In most religions, once a congregation out grows their place of worship and moves to a larger one, they will sell the building. Even sell it to those of another faith. Or sell it to a commercial business.

Having said that, if there are still religious articles inside, respect for members of that faith would preclude any forms of vandalism. Most of us on this forum wouldn't harm any building.

I don't know about Jewish tradition, but in liturgical churches, the church is consecrated when the altar is placed in the sanctuary and desecrated as a church when the altar leaves. The building may still be adorned with crosses, but it is not considered a church unless there is that table with the scriptures and the sacraments.

If the place of worship has been desecrated already by removing the altar, then I would say that it is free to explore without conscience and question of it being a moral issue, but a legal one.

It is free to explore without conscience at any point, if that is okay with you. It is absolutely fine with me.

Someone make take issue with you doing it when it is "holy." Someone make take issue with you doing it after it is "holy." But if they never know about it, then they have no issue at all.

If you want to do it, then go ahead and do it. If you want to be careful about not offending people for some reason, then don't post about doing it on the internet.

+1 - Totally! Why would anyone want to cut off a thread full of off-topic arguments and bickering? I mean, it's not like every aspect of this topic hasn't been covered already
