Any Jewish Explorers Here? I Have an Ethical Question.

In my town we have an abandoned synagogue. It's absolutely beautiful on the outside, and I am dying to take a peek inside.
However, as a person of Faith myself, I try very hard to be sensitive to the Faiths of others. I know nobody worships there anymore, but that doesn't change the fact that it was built to be a house of worship, and should be respected as such.
Are there any rules or restrictions that I should know of that would be in effect in a "living" synagogue? Anywhere that I shouldn't go, or do?
Thanks for any feedback.

Go. As long as you are respectful I see no issue.

I'm not Jewish, but I'm pretty sure that once it is abandoned, it is no longer a synagogue; it is a building that used to be a synagogue.

In most religions, once a congregation out grows their place of worship and moves to a larger one, they will sell the building. Even sell it to those of another faith. Or sell it to a commercial business.

Having said that, if there are still religious articles inside, respect for members of that faith would preclude any forms of vandalism. Most of us on this forum wouldn't harm any building.

Don't worry. God isn't real. So I'm sure he won't mind you checking out the place.

Wouldn't your preservation of it be showing more respect than every single person who ever passes by it?

I'm Jewish!

Since the Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, a Synagogue is merely a place for us to gather and be of faith together. The building holds no value, only the congregation.

Is that snow or asbestos?

but if you choose to disagree with science and believe in god thats your choice. having said that i think you are 100% in the clear to explore it regardless of religion- just leave it in the same condition you found it

Well obviously the existence or nonexistence of any god from any religion shouldn't stop us from being respectful when we're crawling through old buildings. I always find abandoned churches and temples to be the most moving places.

I'm on your side but if faith of any kind makes ones life easier than no need to disparage it. I'm just a meaningless speck in the annuls of time so I have no fucking clue what will happen to my spectral innards after my body returns to the soil. aaaaaaaand I've been drinking.

I said "respect for members of that faith" and that was what I intended to say. We could debate the truth or lack of truth to any belief and never reach agreement. Because of my respect for other humans, I am not going to damage any building they hold dear.

We all have our own beliefs. Saying god isn't real is just asking for a flame war. That has nothing to do with the thread. At least in my opinion.

Saying god isn't real on an online community is like posting a ford vs. gmc thread.

Guaranteed flame.

and we don't want flame wars do we.

(disapproving smile of course) :-p

Seeing as how the bible advocates beating women, murdering sons, and selling slaves I'm sure a little trespass is fine.

I'd like to insert a facepalm here.

I don't have the same ideological and spiritual beliefs of anyone here at all, but I can't understand wanting to jump in and tell someone exactly how different we are when the subject comes up. It's pretty self-centered and outlandishly irrelevant. The OP asked a question you're not capable of providing an answer to...so get over yourself and read the next thread.

But couldn't one argue using the exact same logic by saying if you don't like my reply, don't read it and move on?
