http://www.autoblo...ck-license-plat%2F There's a petition online against the new NY plates coming out next year, because everyone is required to get them, not optional, but required. Shael

it's 25$. Who cares. If you drive, and can't afford the 25$, then you probably shouldn't be driving. I pay 255$ a year for plates...

That may be true, but it doesn't mean the government should just tax the people for no fucking reason, especially when they already have plates.

Wow, sucks to be you.
The personal responsibility train left the station years ago, and you gave it the finger as you watched it leave. |

Well one of the reason that the Liberty Plates were replaced with the Empire plates (among many other official reasons) was the issue of license plate forgeries. However this is just one of Patterson's stupid ideas since he does not know people.

There probably is a reason, other than what one blogger thinks.

here in quebec we are riding around 260$ a year to plate a car. in 92 they stopped issueing annual registration stickers and now we dont even get the "renewal month" sticker. Bus nismo shouldnt be calling new yorkers cheap, you have to remember the cost of plating a car in quebec includes a contribution to our no fault insurance program (we have nationalized liability insurance) so its technically a bargain. I do wish we would get a new plate here in quebec, the one we presently have is a continuation of the 1979 series (white with blue lettering) once they ran out of 000X000 plate numbers they started with XXX 000 then in the early nineties they switched to 000 XXX. but still boring. all in all i wouldnt be too angry about the cost of plating a car in new york, my boss is mohawk (they can plate thier cars in the states) and his caddy is plated in new york, its so cheap to plate that he leaves the plate on it when he stores it. I cant even imagine storing my cars with the plates on!

Yeah I just paid my drivers license renewal, which was 93$ because I had a speeding ticket in 08. Normally it's around 70ish. Plates are 255$ a year. I live in Ontario, and have been for over a year, but keep my Quebec plates and license registered to my mothers house because insurance here is just insane. So even with the much higher registration and all, I still save well over 4000$ a year compared to having Ontario plates.

Nismo's comment not withstanding... Because of New York City and Long Island, the rest of New York enjoys pretty much some of the highest insurance rates in the nation. On top of that, our registrations are every two years to the tune of $80. The annual 'safety' inspections charge $21. And then there is the Law Enforcement surchage built into your insurance, then there is the sales tax, then there is the $35 fee to title a car. Downstate, during an inspection, the car isn't just plugged in the DMV database, they do a complete emissions test. I know for the rest of you in other places, this doesn't sound all that. What chaps everyone's ass was the fact that we had the Liberty plates from 1984-85 until 2000-2001... and it was fine. We got the Empire State plates and that would be great. All this is new plate thing is a chance for the state to make an additional $129 million at the already overtaxed citizen's expense. We DON'T need new plates. I could rail on and on and on about Paterson, but this is about cars.

Man it sucks up there. SC we got pissed when they added a $25 a year road use fee in my county. Back when I had my 69 Jeepster Commando my taxes every year (plate) were $15. Then they added the road use fee BS. And basic insurance was about $35 a month. When I was 19. Oh, and no emission testing or vehicle inspections. We actually did AWAY with it. Ah, I love the south........

When I lived in New York (again actually for second time - I lived there from birth at first to 1990) I thought registration and insurance was not bad for a new driver. I forget what registration was but insurance for me was 599.60 for six months which actually surprised my father. I only thought the drivers license was expensive compared to Oregon (only 40.00) but I'd figured it just was because of that pesky NYC. Oregon is not too bad for regisration and everything. However, Washington State has I think a pretty slick program. Your registration fees and everything goes into the state transportation services fund which funds roads, passenger rail and ferries. They do fee increases but its only when your plates are up for renewal. I have a pretty inexpensive renewal fee because I have Oregon ham plates which are $5.
