Worst automobile engines of all time

Thoughts? They fail to mention the 80s-90s Ford 3.8. Mated to an auto, it's disappointing at best in terms of power and gas mileage, and the one in my mom's 96 Windstar threw a rod in 2000 with 50,000 miles of regular dealer service, repair, and oil changes. During those years, about 30-40% of the time was spent in a rental Escort because the Windstar was a piece of shit in almost every way imaginable.

i disagree with the 2.2L Mopar and the 2.2L OHV GM. I had 9 of those engines and only ONE did I ever have to change the headgasket and that was only because it was under warranty and I figured the car had been beaten hard before I got it. There were rules to that engine. You want it to survive, you ran quality oil in it, let it warm up to temperature instead of beating the shit out of it cold. As for being gutless, I disagree... I had the 2.0L OHV version as well as the last gen 2.2L OHV TBI and then on through MPFI and SFI models. The only time the 2.2L OHV felt gutless was when GM stuffed it under the hood of the S10. Too much truck for too little an engine. I remember last time this list surfaced on this board...

again, this surfaced back when the list originally came out in 2009. The Quad 4 was a great race engine, but sucked in real world applications. It was too damn fragile for daily abuse by the average american. The 2.4L Twin Cam, although a whisker different, still was of the same design and suffered the same fate. I remember what a nightmare changing a water pump was on these cars. In a 99 Grand Am GT, the book called for 12 hours to change one. My brother could do it in a little over 7. The Ecotec is what the Quad4/Twin Cam SHOULD'VE been, but wasn't.

the 2.8L doesn't deserve hate after a certain year. The 60-degree V was just like any other clean-sheet engine- it had a teething period. The original engines that appeared in the X and A-body (that's Citation and Celebrity to you people) were alright people mover engines, but due to a design issue (thanks Powertrain), #4 rod bearing would fail... all. the. fucking. time. As it turned out, it was too small a spring a in the oil pump. Corrected and the 60-degree V became a legendary engine that you could beat the ever-loving fuck out of all day long. Again, though, that reputation was soiled by the unholy abortion of te 3100 and 3400... never go with the lowest bidder on a gasket... ever.

Ironically, the 3.6L can trace its roots all the way back to that humble little 2.8L your gramma had in here Celebrity.

Another thing I want to touch on with the 2.8L was the stupidity of GM putting it in EVERYTHING. They stuffed it in everything from the Citation to the S10 Blazer. Once you got away from an FWD compact car, the 2.8L lost a fair amount of ballbag. I remember driving a Camaro with a 2.8L thinking "I hope i don't have to pass anyone..." And the Blazer was worse, saddled with a whole bunch more tonnage!

So can the hate on the 60.

What a stupid list. 2.2s (GM and Chrysler) were fantastic, even if the Chrysler 2.2 sounded like an eggbeater from day one.

Things I'd add to the list... going by my experiences in the industry.

GM 3.4 DOHC
The Quad4
GM 3.1 V6 and all of its variants (Sorry. That's one shit engine.)
Mitsubishi 2.6 I-4 (Used in Chrysler stuff in the 80s)
GM 301 V8 (Fun if you like bending every single pushrod at least monthly)
Whatever the fuck the Isuzu Trooper had.
The carbed 1.5 liter I-4 found in the first generation Hyundai Excel (I think it was a Mitsu)
Chrysler 2.7 EER V6 (Very premature timing chain failure and cylinder sleeves liked to slip out of their bore)
Early Ford 2.0 Zetec (I've replaced about 20 of these)
VW 1.8T - Just a slut to do anything on. They seem to last in the mechanical sense, but the little finicky problems between PCV hoses rotting out, sludge from people not driving them hard enough or using the right oil, and accessibility are enough to drive a tech nuts. I have no love for this engine.
GM LY7 3.6 V6- We were doing a couple of these a week under warranty because of timing chain failure.

my 01 sunfire was the 2.4, i was lucky enough to get 350 000km out of it on the original head gasket. what did it in was the water pump. my mechanic told me he wouldnt change it. He said with the mileage changing the water pump would be pointless... picked up an ecotec powered cavalier to replace it.

yeah, the 3.4L DOHC was a fucktacular boat anchor... you had to damn near pull the engine out of the car to change either the alternator or the timing belts.

as for the 3.1L MPFI engine, that's one rugged son-of-a-bitch of an engine. We have a friend here named Appleseed. He should work for the auto industry as a torture tester. There are ONLY three engines this kid could NOT blow up. 1)2.2L TBI in a Cavalier, a 3.1L V6 in a early 90's Lumina and a 3.0L V6 in a late 80's, early 90's Taurus.

The Pontiac 301!! That, Bandi old sock, is a blast from the past. A friend of mine had one in a 78 Buick LeSabre sedan. Got it so hot going down the interstate one summer day, it locked up and blew every gasket in the engine. No problem. It cooled down, fired back up and lived to fight another day. Gutless, yet rugged!

as for the 3.6's, i had not heard about that. I only saw what came through my brother's shop and he got done in September.

my friend Lorenzo has a Grand Prix GTP with the 3.4 DOHC in it mated to a 5speed. I hate to say it, but for a barge, it hustles and sounds fucking angry doing it.

I used to dirt track race a Regal coupe (bows head in shame) with a 301... could not make that POS run right, and it loved bending pushrods at higher revs. Ended up swapping in a 305 which worked a thousand times better.

i had an 81 Regal coupe, but mine had the 3.8L V6 in it... what a gutless fucking turd. The steering column was shot when I got it, so i took a column out of that 78 LeSabre... it didn't fit *exactly* right, but it fit well enough... you had to keep tightening up the two bolts under the dash and the unibolt holding it to the floor/firewall. Also, the linkage didn't work right, so you had to downshift it by hand... I went to go to 2nd and tagged 1st so many times, i am amazed i never blew it up.

Weren't they either a GM 2.2 or 2.8?

Edit- Google is my friend... and I was 100% wrong. All Isuzu specific engines were used in troopers.

a friend of mine had an 82 S10 with an Isuzu 1.9L hooked to a 4speed manual... what a gutless bastard. I don't think he ever got the truck into 4th it was so gutless.

my 93 ford ranger had the 2.5l... i hated that little motor till the day it died 209,000 miles later.

4 cyl sohc dual plug with a nice looking cast header- should have run great! But.. it could not get out if its own way sometimes...

but.... it never left me stranded...

The GM 2.8L from the S-10 was an build to order option but many Isuzu dealers in the NW ordered them for the lot. I see a few around here.

I really find them easy to work on but maybe its because I see so many of them, run a proper 5w40 synthetic oil with the Large sized filter 940/25 and dont be afraid to hit boost and it will last for ever. I regularly see them with well over 250-300k on the clock. With a chip it really is a nice little peppy engine
