I dunno- I work for VW so I see a lot of the things... I've seen a lot of them have some really nasty crank bearing failure and more than a few where either the chain tensioner has failed and caused valve interference. Plus the vacuum/pcv system is shit and is made out of cheese. But they're fun!

Most of the failures I see in the Golf and Jetta 1.8L's are in the bottom end and the manual transmissions. What the fuck is it about these cars that Reverse is so fragile. A friend of mine had 2 Jetta's (97 & 98) and a Golf (98) and each one of them was missing reverse. Anyways, i've always thought the VR6 was the better engine if you were going to buy a gas-powered strudelmobile.
