Oh man, I had a 91 factory turbo 5spd just like your gem. Among about twenty five more turbo dodges. Got rid of the last one (Shelby lancer) about a year ago... So I feel your pain when it comes to these cars. I almost bought a spirit rt last week but I used my better judgement and bought a mazdaspeed 6 instead.

the spirit wouldn't rust out as fast as the mazda.

You're right. But the paint would start flaking off as you're pulling out of the dealer's lot.

There's not a single word that can be spoken in defense of 80's and 90's Chrysler paint jobs.

that flaking was a feature, chrysler offered a "flaked" effect at the time

wasn't just Chrysler... everyone tried to skip a priming step in their paintjobs... the end effect was that the paint did not adhere well to the primer and it flaked off. Also, Ford has a problem with some of their colors where they would oxidize and chalk right off after a year or two. My fathers' 89 Mustang GT convertible did that.

my 89 Shadow ES Turbo was so rotten, you could put your finger through the subframe. My 86 Dodge 600 was rotten right behind the left front tire... until i fixed it, you got showered whenever you drove the car in the rain.

The thing with the Mazda is its fucking ugly. i mean, what-the-fuck ugly. it's too bad you have to have that engine and transmission in that fugly ass body.

I don't think it's ugly at all. Much better looking than any of the boxy ass 80's cars I would normally buy

Sex on wheels.

Also The worst rot I've ever had on a car was my 87 lebaron. The rocker panels and driver side floor were swiss cheese. Second worse was my 88 daytona. Clean floor, but no rocker panels. They rusted through. They do seem hold up better than GMs and fords of the same year, but they're still not forever. I think I got pretty lucky with the Spirit, but I don't hear about them rotting out too badly compared with other 80s chryslers.

I don't think I've seen an 024 in 15 years!

The only Daytonas I ever had rocker rust issues on were Turbo Zs with the ground effects that would catch all the dirt/sand/salt. However, my Daytonas all rotted everywhere else, mostly behind the strut towers (where they kinda connected to the firewall area and the floors right under your feet. I couldn't drive my '86 through puddles without getting soaked. It used to fill up the glovebox with water, too.

I think the rustiest car I've driven (I won't include the countless VWs I've pulled out of fields and forests) was an '89 Toyota Tercel coupe. It came from a town with lots of nickel mines, etc... and just seemed to be rotten to the core. It didn't look like a rot box, but you could snap metal off of it almost anywhere. The metal was brown all the way through.

Also had an '82 Datsun 720 King Cab that was taken off the road in 1987 because of rust. (I got it in '97 for a field truck)

It matches the driving stupidity of a lot of people that drive them.

Hahahaha yes.

My co-worker's Mazda3 rolled a 1/4 mile down his driveway into a tree yesterday morning at about 2 miles an hour. He said the car was smiling the whole time.

my friend Grrrrr (yes, that's his nickname... his real name is John) has a Mazdaspeed6 and yes, it's a sleeper, but it's already rusting... badly. There's more rust on the Mazda than there is on my 17 year old Beretta and the L-bodies rotted if you looked at them wrong.

Keep it garage kept forever. Because it's like they didn't even rust treat them, at all.

That said, looking at all the square body S-10s still on the road, I shudder to think of what my Mom's 08 Colorado will look like in 10 years.

I thought that's why they painted cars , so they don't rust.

welcome to reality... here's the thing; most cars rust from the inside out not, not the other way around. That's why the structure needs to be rustproofed or chemically treated to slow that oxidization.
