It is one of only two freestanding grain elevators left in Ontario, a reminder of the agricultural history of the region. CN Rail has given the Elevator to "Friends of The Pontypool Elevator", a goup that hopes to have it declared a heritage site. A grain elevator is usually only just a part of a larger milling facility like our malt, Victory Soy or the several operating mills in existence. I -think- Pontypool elevator is a 'freestanding' elevator because it is not attached to any silos, or mills. Farmers dumped grain in the hopper, the elevator pulled the grain up and spit it out into a train car. That's my two cents worth.
