| | | Knowledge of when the drain will and will not be "full". This includes weather reports, as well as some degree of knowledge of your drain system. This is very important information. The most important item I feel needs mentioning, is a reliable means of entry and exit of the drain itself. All the knowledge in the world will not help you if you go on down the drain, and when you're ready to leave someone has closed it off, sealing you inside. If you don't know how to get out, don't go in, and definately have a backup plan.

- Camera
- Sturdy tripod
- Ziploc bag for your camera
- Waders if it's CSO

| | | Snakes in a Drain! Cheap inflatable boats are good for those flooded mystery drains, or you can improvise with air mattresses, styrofoam, etc. Be prepared for confused questions when you get pulled over at 2am wearing waders in a car full of homemade rafts.

| | | Come to think of it, besides knowledge, you don't technically need anything. I've gone draining without a flashlight several times, in drains I know anyway, and it's quite fun. And I hardly ever wear boots. My feet usually get soaked anyway, so unless it's nasty water, boots just make it harder to walk. I can't swim very well, but if it started to rain I'd likely have more than enough time to run to a manhole shaft (in most drains there's one every 50 ft. or so) and open it up (the drain manholes here are small, unless they're old).
You can't fall off a mountain. |
