Knowledge of when the drain will and will not be "full". This includes weather reports, as well as some degree of knowledge of your drain system. This is very important information.

The most important item I feel needs mentioning, is a reliable means of entry and exit of the drain itself. All the knowledge in the world will not help you if you go on down the drain, and when you're ready to leave someone has closed it off, sealing you inside. If you don't know how to get out, don't go in, and definately have a backup plan.

I don't do drains. But you could take a look in the "Tutorials and Useful Information" section or use the search button.

However being a nice guy that I am. Here are a couple suggestions.
- Good Boots
- Hip Waders
- Flashlight
- Waterproof clothes

  • Redundant light sources (unless you're Australian, then just use the screen on your cell phone)
  • Camera
  • Sturdy tripod
  • Ziploc bag for your camera
  • Waders if it's CSO

Salt Crackers.
Sparklers.
Flip-Flops (if you're Texan).
As big a light as you can fit in your backpack and carry for three or more hours.

I take offense to that snide comment. I've started wearing closed toe sandals now.

Snakes in a Drain!

Cheap inflatable boats are good for those flooded mystery drains, or you can improvise with air mattresses, styrofoam, etc. Be prepared for confused questions when you get pulled over at 2am wearing waders in a car full of homemade rafts.

Turn off the internet and go play outside.

Come to think of it, besides knowledge, you don't technically need anything. I've gone draining without a flashlight several times, in drains I know anyway, and it's quite fun. And I hardly ever wear boots. My feet usually get soaked anyway, so unless it's nasty water, boots just make it harder to walk. I can't swim very well, but if it started to rain I'd likely have more than enough time to run to a manhole shaft (in most drains there's one every 50 ft. or so) and open it up (the drain manholes here are small, unless they're old).

You can't fall off a mountain.

Read the info on the cave clan's website. They explain about everything you need to know about drains.
