| | | http://www.respira...tectionsupply.com/ A mask should always be worn when entering an abandoned site interior. You never know what dangers lurk inside. Most home improvement stores have respirators, Just get the one that suits the environment you are going to. If you dont know the environment just get the one with the most protection. I prefer to use the half face respirator compared to the disposable masks but it is every ones personal choice. Here is a pic of a half face respirator. Good Luck

| | | To summarize what everyone will inevitably say: 1) Get a P100 rated respirator, they go for 20-30 bucks at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. and they filter out asbestos and most common other nasties (i.e. pigeon shit bacteria). 2) Don't use a dust mask (the white paper ones that cover your face and nose), they're essentially pointless. 3) Many abandoned buildings have asbestos, especially insulating pipes or in floor tiles. Do your best not to disturb it (even if wearing a respirator) as it creates asbestos clouds, and that's how it gets into your lungs. 4) If a building is relatively open (most windows knocked out or something like that) chances are good that the airborne asbestos levels will be low, so you should be ok, but it's still good to be on the safe side. 5) Wear clothes you don't mind trashing when you go in, as sometimes it's necessary to dump them if they get covered in asbestos particles. 6) Asbestos exposure is cumulative, and it affects different people in different ways. A little exposure over a long time is still potentially harmful. Some people will react after even a small dose. | | | I try to wear my respirator whenever going into a building or questionable situation. I should start wearing disposable clothes though... What does everyone wear for clothing? What about painters outfits? Do you wash your clothes after going into a building? Or does that cross-contaminate the rest of the clothing in the cycle? What about footwear and stuff? -Me!

| | | My friends and I were exploring a coal power plant last night, and this morning I blew my nose, and whatever came out was black. I'm assuming from coal dust. We were wearing our respirators for about 95%% of the trip.. Moral of the story. Wear your respirator or get Black Lung.

| | | Asbestos is a very real danger to guard against. I would suggest a good mask for any place that you don't know already. Lead paint, if it's flaking can be evil too. For clothing I often wear jeans, long-sleeve T-shirt . . . old stuff mostly. And sneakers, though I know boots would probably be a better idea overall. Covering your hair, even with a cap, is wise too. Because things will fall into it.

That happened to me, but with cement dust. My usual steam tunnel exit was locked, so I had to use a long concrete crawl tunnel to get out. I stirred up so much grey cement dust off the floor of the crawl tunnel... I was hacking/sneezing up grey powdery snot for the rest of the night. I think dust masks would have prevented that, though.

| | | That just goes to show you how good of a "dust mask" your nose actually is. All that sticky snot actually traps quite a bit of the contaminents in the air. All you gotta do is blow your nose, and out it comes. A little food for thought.

I think I'll stick to filters provided by 3M. I'm not sure of the protection rating of snot.

As with the P-100 filters, good idea to keep those on and tight.

The only problem with disposable suits is that there are mostly white, that tends to stick out quite a bit. Tyvek makes also grey suits but they are more heavy and not very comfortable. Time to make some camo disposable suits I guess.

| | | I was considering just getting a pair of coveralls and bringing a trashbag in my backpack whenever I plan on spending extended periods of time inside an unhappy place. I would slip the coveralls on over my clothes, wear them around inside, and then slip them off and toss them in the trashbag once somewhere safe outside of the building or whatever, for the car ride home, and then washing them before wearing them again. The only problem, I'm not sure if a washing machine will get all of that evil dust, such as our slim, slender, and tricky friend asbestos, out of clothes. Does anybody know if it would? As for respirators, I just went to Lowe's (a big home improvement place) and asked where I could find an asbestos-quality respirator and he led me to the P100's before I even knew what the LINGO was. So, you don't even need to sound like you know what you're talking about

| | | From what I remember from my brother telling me (he's in construction) asbestos is a pretty nasty substance. If you try washing it, it will stay in the washing machine, and it will stay in the clothes. It basically gets stuck in fabric like little jagged barbs, it will end up in your dryer, and get in other clothes. I'd say the safest bet is just tossing your clothing.

| | | Well I believe my brother was talking about a very high level of contamination. It would be more of a hassel to go through cleaning your clothes and your machine, than to jus toss them.
