The Keepsake House

I don't really like the name Keepsake House as I don't think it fits with the history of the house and the past inhabitants but I'm not clever enough to think of another one so I'll just let it be for now ha.

This large abandoned house is probably one of the best in the UK at this moment. The upstairs is like stepping back in time with bedrooms filled with vintage possessions as well as the regular hallmarks of a hoarder - stacks and stacks of newspapers, whole boxes full of window latches, masses of shoes, no fewer than four cookers and three fridges in the kitchen etc etc. The last owner of the house was a politician, and at the best guess he died before his wife, who carried on living in the house spiraling down the path of a hoarder. The upstairs looked to have not been used in some time, with the 'final' bed in a downstairs living room surrounded by piles of stuff and a dresser stacked with medication bottles. After some rummaging I found numerous weird things including books on Scientology, a Russian photo book from the time of the Cold War and various pieces of paperwork from Masonic lodges.

It's an amazing house, absolutely beautiful on the outside and would make a fantastic renovated home for someone. At the back of the extensive grounds is a large brick garage with a Fiat Strada inside, although sadly locked tight it is just about visible through a window.

I managed to break a quite integral part of my tripod very soon after starting to shoot inside the house so I wasn't able to get a number of the angles of things that I wanted or originally intended to, which sucks.

Kabbalah is an undramatic tradition that requires great patience and stability. One of the reasons for this tempo is that everyone has to mature his potential gradually and thoroughly at his natural pace. In this way his life's work unfolds at the right moment in his own and the cosmos's time.

Damn, thanks haha. I rarely do houses as they aren't usually what I find most interesting but every so often one pops up that I simply cannot pass up. I've done three such houses this year, and I have to say I did enjoy them all.

Just curious on how the place is so untouched, if it's been there for so long you'd think half of that stuff would have been taken. Just a question, as I'm not really aware of the "keepsake house" so.

I would say those shots were worth the broken tripod

The first two shots had me. The whole set is very well captured. Each room had its little surprises that mesmerized me. What an interesting location Mookster. Houses may not be your favorite thing but you surely do a great job on the lighting and unique finds

It's not been empty long, at least not compared to most houses. By my guess going off newspaper dates and letters from various companies found inside the last occupant died around five years ago and it's simply sat there either due to no Will or no relatives, or a family fighting over assets, who knows.

It's on a fairly busy road but totally hidden out of sight behind a thick bank of trees and hedgerows, so if you didn't know there was a house there beforehand you'd never know.

One of my school friends had a TV like that, made by Philips if I recall.

This really is one of your best finds! I actually spent a rather long time looking at all the different items in each photo, cool stuff!

When I saw you post these shots on Facebook I thought they were amazing. Now that I am looking at them in better resolution and on my computer rather than phone I am truly blown away!
This is certainly up there with some of the best houses I have seen pictures of. What a true time capsule, and you captured it perfectly.

Several houses I have explored it seemed as though the upstairs was disused well before the first floor, as you describe here. So I imagine it's not terribly uncommon, particularly for a elderly person living alone.

How much did that dress with the mannequin head hanging on the door scare you? If I turned the corner of that hallway and saw that I imagine a bit of poop would have came out.

Awesome find. The longer I look at each picture the more and more intrigued I am. Love the type writer and creepy doll hanging from the door..the Marlboro bag is interesting as well.

I understand why they call it the Keepsake house! Such beautiful photos. Did you see any dates or any clues as to how old the house might be or even when it was abandoned? I am curious on the age of the house. I know you say Cold war era but was there anything else?
