| | General Store < on 7/6/2008 2:43 AM >
| | | This place is a treasure and a rarity. Only a few of the places I visit really strike me. This is one of those. I almost wanted to grab an old lawn chair and set it on the porch and watch the traffic pass. It is in the pause that we truly appreciate the ephemeral. The photographs following are of a fairly well known General Store in the Parry Sound Muskoka Region as of July, 2008. I am sure many of you know the location - it is no secret, however, I would rather err on the side of caution here. My desire to protect it makes me paranoid... LOL!
The pic above shows how pretty this building is, even in decay. Built in 1894, the General Store was to become the center of activity in the small community. The store closed its doors for the last time in 1967.

| | | Wow that is an interesting looking old store. Surprising to see stuff still on the shelves and no broken windows or vandalism, especially after being closed for 40 years! Nice find.

| | | If you go further down the road a bit, on the opposite side of the road, you will find nailed to a tree, the original sign with the town's name which hung on the railway station. You can also drive down the old railway bed, but I don't recommend it.

| | | Thanks everyone! I certainly did not 'discover' this one - but I enjoyed visiting it.

Hard to see the sign right now for all the foliage! I didn't find it - but I know it's there! I would agree with sudbury - do not drive down the railway bed! The old schoolhouse is still standing and is well maintained as well. As for interior shots - This building was locked up tight and I was on my own. In some ways, I was glad to that there was no good entry point that I could find - the site is quite respected. It is difficult to tell if the residential part of building is seasonally occupied or not and that could be the biggest reason why. The only interior shot I got of the store was because of a hole in some glass big enough for my hand and my camera. That part of the building has clearly not been used for much longer than the residential part....

| | | awww man.... This post is one weekend too late for me. Last weekend I was up Parry Sound & Whitestone poking around in different areas. Heading up that way again in August. Can you enter this into the database or message me the location? Would love to check it out. If you know of anything else up that way, let me know. Thanks a lot.

You'll get a very big fine if you get caught! ATVs and snowmobiles only... It's a rec trail now.

| | | Well my original comment was in reference to a VERY skinny path which is impossible to turn around on. One could conceivably drive for an hour without finding a spot to turn around.

Yeah but you have a 4x4. I have a GM car that's already seen two tow trucks (the same truck twice, really) and one flat tire while exploring. The not knowing how far the train bed was, also deterred me as did the possibility of oncoming vehicles however unlikely.

| | | I came across this one near our cottage. It is in Old Killaloe, just outside the village of Killaloe. I didn't get a chance to go in, but when i peeked in, there was a ferris wheel in there!! It was definitely a surreal sight!!

And by the time you find one it could be across a deep puddle... And the ATVer's are nuts. I've nearly been clipped on trails that are multivehicle...

They say "you can't judge a book by its cover!" I say "YES you can, if the cover has a girl on it with a cock in her mouth, its PORN!" if she's 18 and the cock is black, its GREAT porn! |

logtec, I don't know this particular trail but I would say yes. Most converted rail beds have no track if ATV's and snowmobiles use them...at least around here anyway. And like BatGirl suggests, I would be careful about getting hit by ATV's.
