| | | here's one I thought I'd NEVER have even consider... what's the largest size group you'd suggest for draining? I just recently was with 4 others, and now more want to come! I don't want to turn people away, but I don't think that 9+ people is a good idea, so I have to come up with something. We've been considering splitting up into 2 groups and checking out seperate parts of a drain system, but even that I'm a little hesitant of. So, what's the number you personally would try to keep to a low (please note that these are noobs [even mroe than I] that are following me in, and even tho they are my friends, I have no problem telling them off if they might complain midway, etc. etc.)

| | | we happily go draining here in groups that can number up to and over 20 on a big night out, and that usually is a newbs night for new explorers.... it's location dependent......... if its big, safe, easy to get in and out of then numbers are no issue

Yeah.. but you're like in Australia. I've heard that you can fit a bus in most of your drains.

For some reasons, I've tried to search for such a question but can't find it. What search terms did you used ?

| | | The thread you pointed me to is not really about draining but more about general exploration. I think that shotgun_mario wants the advice of more than one person too.

You betcha |

| | | I'd say, if you don't feel completely comfortable going with that many people in one group, then don't. Just explain to them that it is too dangerous for that many people to go at once. It's your decision who you want to take, an no one else's.

| | | I also put four as the max. The more people you have when doing any type of exploring, the more people to make noise, to get hurt, to get caught. In the part of Missouri I'm from, there aren't a whole lot of big drains, so taking more that four people makes it cumbersome to keep everyone together. Also, I try to make sure that I go with at least one other person I can trust to keep their cool in all situations aka someone who's done stuff before.

| | | As hatsumi said, it's location dependent. What kind of drain is it/how big/how easy is it to get in and out without being noticed (if you care)?

| | | I like 2 to 4. It's just enough that if one get's injured or in trouble, then one can stay while the other(s) go get help, if in dire need.

| | | yea, 4 I've always thought was nice for everything else. Once we hit 5 it became difficult, as I was leading and I couldn't hear the last 2 in the line. The drain we were in on Sunday was about 5' diameter, 50 feet down, with waterfalls every 100 yards, so it was quite noisy. It split up into different levels as we went in, so I've talked it over with someone and we either: A: all go into one drain, and we split into teams and take different levels. B: split up and do different drains I know of. C: limit people...
I have friends coming from out of town this weekend who are interested, so I might just tell them I'm going with them, and tell my local friends they can either wait a day or two to go with me, or they can go off in a separate drain system, as I feel it would be too hazardous to split into teams (12+ people in one drain system would be WAY to much) the drain itself is well hidden, but the way to the drain is on a very well traveled road, down a path that goes JUST to the drain in the middle of some high-class suburbs overlooking lake michigan, so I'm fairly cautious that no one acts out of the ordinary when going down. although, there is another drain 800 yards up shore... maybe I'll tell the other team to go check that out and see if they meet up... ? | | | It really depends on the drain size (height and width, not length), for a crawler, 2 max, for one just large enough to stand up in, or perhaps a little shorter, I'd say 3, MAYBE 4, but much bigger than that, it probably wouldn't be an issue how many, although 20 seems a bit much; I would say 5-7 for a big one, but it depends on who's going, ie can you control them, are they going to back out or perhaps hurt themselves half way, etc. Just do what seems the most reasonable to you, but tend to err on the lower side of your comfort range, to avoid overcrowding

| | | I usually say going alone is a good idea, but with draining, I would say always have a buddy. That being said, I would keep numbers down to avoid confusion. Look at the size and make a conservative guess as to how many people can go w/o it being a total cluster-fuck.

| | | Least common denominator. It's what the least-able person is able to accomplish. If you take 5 and one gets cold feet, you gotta bail. Who is least able? base the numbers on that..Draconian, yes. Logical, yes.

I realize i kind of messed up what I wanted to say those numbers are the maximum ranges I would do; I would prefer to have no more than one other person in any circumstance
