| | | Posted by Marko Kovacevic What price range would i be looking in? I'm looking for $300 with a head.
|
-A Manfrotto complete w/head shouldn't cost more than approx. $300, brand spanking new. The Gitzos I've seen all cost $1000+ - which, IMHO, they simply aren't worth. Again - buy the Manfrotto, spend the leftover cash going somewhere interesting to explore.

There is a really stable Gitzo for 330$ here. I know the $30 rule applies to UE, but what about tripods? You don't want a bad one. I am not a banned person.

I buy about 3-4 tripods a year. I break or bend tripods all the time. I would never spend $300 on a tripod i was going to take exploring. Now stop internet exploring and go do some exploring. These questions are getting pretty redundant. Reading your threads is like the Abbott and Costello who's on 5th skit on a loop. [last edit 1/17/2008 9:33 PM by suicidepactphoto - edited 1 times]

Dude, that's the total reason you need to spend $200 on a tripod. You won't waste your $$ on those cheapies that keep breaking. [last edit 1/18/2008 3:44 AM by Air - edited 1 times]

-As others have already pointed out - that says more about the tripods you buy than anything else. My previous tripod lived for close to ten years before giving up the ghost last year. During that time, it had been checked luggage on dozens of flights, only wrapped in a canvas holster. It had been submerged on numerous occasions - in sea water as well as in hydraulic fluid, a pretty effective corrosive liquid. (Naturally, on all occasions I cleaned it thoroughly afterwards, and allowed it to dry before stowing it away. It had been banged about in the trunk of a car for more miles than I care to think of. Also, it accompanied me on loads of hiking trips - typically strapped to the exterior of my backpack, exposed to the elements and whatever obstacles I had to make my way through. I never bent it, though I have had to replace a couple of fittings and the rubber feet. What finally killed it off? A truck ran over it. Anyway - quality gear pays off in the long run.

| | | Hey OddE, If I come back in the next life as a tripod, I don't want OddE buying me . I have to ask two things: 1) How did a truck run over your tripod?, and 2) what type of tripod do you own. If it can stand up to your needs and survive a long time, I want one.
I'm going hunting for mysteries. Where's my flashlight? Don't Like Clowns who Vandalize, B&E, and Steal from Sites. |

1) It fell off a Land Rover during an off-road gathering. The Land Rover following in our tracks promptly ran it over. Oops. 2) The previous one was a Manfrotto of some sort or the other, and the amount of beating it took before giving in (Plus, the local dealer's willingness and ability to sell me replacement parts when needed) really left me with no choice but to buy another. At first, I treated it with almost the same care as I did my camera, but after seeing what it could take without complaining, it kind of got to the point where I was eager to find out just _how_ much abuse it could take and still work... My current one is a 055X PRO, quite similar to the previous one, albeit slightly more light-weight.

| | | I must be so old/stupid because I don't even understand the question. No grappling hook, tabi boots, sonic guard dog phasers. I'm assuming that this stuff trumps a flashlight and a pair of waders. More important than a good rope, I mean a good one. Shit you can't be without a shitty raft AND a good pump (keeps the raft from sinking, they always get holes you can't seem to patch when it's below 0) I'm gonna but an H3 a laptop with megs of stuff, and a big dork chair to read about exploration from.
I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner! Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite. Strategic Beer Command ruling the desert since 1995 http://www.strategic-beer-command.com |
