| | | P100s and tear gas < on 11/29/2007 9:18 PM >
| | | Anyone know if P100s would be any use against tear gas? I cover the occasional protest/riot, and especially with the DNC in Denver next year, I was thinking that the respirator might not be a bad thing to bring with. And, yes, it would get in your eyes, but my newspaper's resident radical feminist taught me a neat trick: swim goggles.

| | | Swim goggles are a protesters best friend, I don't know about the P100 though; but anything is better than nothing. If some people use rags and that helps a little then a P100 should do well. The only sure way to avoid getting gassed is to invest in a gas mask and some filters. I have one for just such an occasion but I'm not sure what the police would do (although you might be better off than I would be if you are reporter/journalist just covering the event rather then a protester).

As far as filters go, much depends on whether your mask accepts standard, 40mm screw filters or something else. If your respirator uses 40mm filters, the absolute best option, in my opinion, is Scott's "enforcement cartridge", which has a ten-year shelf life, costs a mere $20 at places like Botach, and is specifically designed to protect against CN and CS, as well as a whole host of other unpleasant things. If you can get an unexpired, unopened military C2 or C2A1 filter, or similar NBC filter, for less, by all means go for it - but for peace of mind at a civil disturbance, a fresh $20 cartridge designed to protect against riot-control agents is hard to beat. If your mask does not take these standard filters, you want the "best" filter the manufacturers offer - this will typically be a combination filter, providing both P100 particulate protection and protection against a very wide range of chemicals and "organic vapors". If you've got an MSA or AO Safety mask, for example, that take the two little screw-in cartridges, go for something like MSA's "GME-P100" filter. This is, strictly speaking, overkill, as a "P100" filter (99.97% efficiency against particulates) rating is the standard for protection against CN and CS, but the additional protection costs little extra and provides additional peace of mind. |

| | | Do some research. 3M site shows what it can and can't filter. Tear gas, nerve gas etc can't be filtered and you have to use SCBA. Pepper spray, which isn't really gas, should be filtered by P100

It can be filtered by an NBC gas mask filter, SCBA isn't practical for riot control and that is why they outfit riot cops with gas masks when they deploy tear gas.

Holy shit I KNOW! I was sprayed with dog mace once, and I thought I was going to go blind. I couldn't breathe, see, speak, or think for at least a half hour. And after that it still sucked. The next morning I woke up and had 2 black eyes and a sore throat/nose. Fuckin ridiculous... That was a happy 16th birthday....

Mace is 1000% more nasty than pepper spray. Can you say chemical warfare? I saw my dumb ass friend try to nail a squirrel with Mace years ago. The squirrel was in a tree, and the wind was blowing toward my pal. A very small amount of invisible mist drifted down into my friends eyes after being deflected when it hit the bark. He was incapacitated near instantly. Both eyes turned B&B within about 5 minute. It was striking how well it worked, but no permanent damage. The tree fur ball got away unscathed Some eat nuts, some are nuts....
Just when I thought I was out... they pulled me back in. |

No, 3M's site - as well as those of Drager, MSA, SEA, Avon, Scott, and others - show what their products are certified (by NIOSH, in this country) to filter. Tear gases, pepper spray, "Mace" (a combination of tear gas and pepper spray) and all nerve "gases" aren't actually gases, they're either solid particulates or liquid mists, and are easily filtered by cannisters designed to do so. (Actual gases, like ammonia or chlorine, are much more problematic.) What a given mask assembly (certification is for a specific combination of parts - a certain cartridge, a certain facepiece, a certain harness, et cetera) is "certified" to protect against only shows what the manufacturer wants to market the mask for, and were willing to pay for. If you look at some of Avon's technical literature, you'll see that they, among others, consider P100 adequate for protection against CN and CS. For example, the instructions that came with my 2002-vintage Phalanx mask from MSA - a "riot control agent" mask designed for law enforcement - state "NIOSH approved for respiratory protection in atmospheres containing CN and CS and particulates under the 42 CFR 80 P100 classification (99.97% efficiency level) against all particulate aerosols, including oil-based aerosols." Riot control agents are severely irritating nasties, but there's nothing at all difficult in protecting against them. Right now, if you want a respirator, you can get new, unused, 2003-vintage Scott and SEA (Safety Equipment of Australia/America) full-face masks on eBay for under $40, shipped - including a fresh NBC-rated 40mm filter good through 2023. (SEA/Sundstrom make the Scott masks.) Most are surplus from law-enforcement agencies, for reasons listed in the link above. For about ten bucks less, you should be able to get a new MSA Ultra-Twin, for which you can get P100 or GME-P100 filters at most large home-improvement stores.

you'd need a p95(i believe) because they use charcoal to filter out noxious gas.

CS tear gas is actually a solid at room temperature. It's used as an aerosol, so it's essentially a particulate.

Tear gas is a particulate. Not a gas. P100 filters are for protection from particulates, with a 99.97% effectiveness rating. P95 filters are also particulate filters, only with a 95% effectiveness rating. So, you're close, except completely wrong. Thanks for trying, though.

Yea, thats probably why it sucked so much. This was actually at my 16th birthday party, we were down in a buddies' basement and one of my friends thought it would be funny to "trick" spray me, he thought it had a safety on it, but in his state of mind he didn't realize that the depressor was turned to the wrong side... He sprayed it right into my face from about 4 feet away, I got the full blast. I remember just laughing for the first 2 seconds, and then suddenly, screaming out in agony. They brought me to a large sink in the basement which we filled up with water, and I stood over it for at least half an hour with my head submerged upside down so the water just covered my eyes. Every time I thought it was over I'd take my face out of the water and be struck again by the blinding pain. My vision was blurred for at least another half hour after the burning stopped. At least I'm a bit more confident in it's stopping power after experiencing it first hand.

| | | only problem with older gas masks, namely the ones you can get on that cheaper than dirt site, the filters are 40+ years old and are expired, it will probably work with tear gas, but not guaranteed. some may be toxic from expiration as well.
