| | Abandoned Shipwreck in the Turks & Caicos Islands < on 4/18/2006 11:58 PM >
| | | I had the pleasure of exploring the shipwreck of the M/V La Famille Express on Saturday while I was in Providenciales visiting friends. It's a former Russian naval freighter built in 1952. It ran aground about 1.5 miles off the shore of the island during Hurricane Frances. It's about 190 feet long, and has an 1100-hp diesel engine. I have photos from all over the ship, but here are a couple to get started. I'd love to make a location for this unique find. Anyone else think it would be worthwhile?
I'm so awesome. It's kind of ridiculous, really. |

| | | Should you make an entry? Dumbest question of the year - of course! If you feel like posting some pics that are publicly accessible that would be grand, but I understand if you don't want to. That's amazing to have a ship just sitting there. Guess the Russkies didn't have the dosh to have it repaired, but you'd think there'd be some effort to remove it. Oh well, better for the explorer. Thanks! [Edited for me being so thick as to not read the original post for the history of the vessel] Cheers [last edit 4/19/2006 12:14 AM by elbowgeek - edited 1 times]

| | | I don't think I'm allowed to make a location yet since I'm still a Basic member. For now, I can put a few more photos up on here.
This is a view from one of the crew cabins, facing forward on the starboard side of the vessel. If you look closely, you can see the anchor chain. The ship apparently dragged anchor all the way to it's current position during the storm surge of the hurricane.
This is one shot of the bridge. Alot of the more valuable items have been stripped by salvagers. Actually, there were two Cubans aboard the ship while we were there, stripping out some of the rusty old Russian electrics. The room was in surprisingly good shape apart from the missing bits.
One view of the engine room. This is what was just beyond the threshold of the door to enter the room. The lowest level is flooded due to the open hatches above, and the fact that there is no operable pump to get it out. I found out this engine is not the original, it was installed in 1969.
The forward part of the engine. I believe it was a straight 6. I thought the exposed valvetrain was really cool. I decided that white stuff looked suspiciously asbestos-y, so I kept my time in this room brief. I have a bunch of others, but I'll have to resize them.
I'm so awesome. It's kind of ridiculous, really. |

| | | Cool find. I bet that was something to see. Not too many get to explore abandoned ships. I would love to take a flying leap into that water! [last edit 4/19/2006 2:34 PM by 0U812 - edited 1 times]

| | | Here's some more photos for you guys. I'm glad you all have found this place as interesting as I have. I'll do my best to caption these.
The view of the abandoned ship from an abandoned house on the shore. It's small on the horizon. (I'll post some more on the house in a little...)
This is some sort of control box thing. There were lights that corresponded to different parts of the ship. Maybe fire control?
I don't know what this thing is. Some sort of radio? If anyone can read Russian, I'd be happy to send a high-res version.
Something to crank out some pumpin' Russian/Haitian beats. Either that or some sort of intercom. Again, everything was in Russian.
Typewriters turn up in the wierdest places. This was stuffed in a drawer, quietly converting itself into rusty dust.
Russian R2D2? I don't know what it is, but I like it alot. Maybe some sort of water heater... but you'd think they'd use the engine's waste heat for that.
I'm so awesome. It's kind of ridiculous, really. |

| | | Looking up the funnel above the engine. Sorry this one turned out kinda blurry. It was really cool in person...
A view into the kitchen through a porthole. The leftmost jar was mayonnaise. I love the old-school fuse panel.
Looking back at the porthole I took the last photo from. Something tells me this room was nasty even before the shipwreck. I don't think I'd want a meal cooked in there.
Yeah, that's right. It's Sand Box 4.
Looking back from the bow of the ship. You can get an idea of the tilt the ship is at. Pretty mild, really.
I'm so awesome. It's kind of ridiculous, really. |

| | | Thanks for the new pics, just incredible. Dang, that would make an awsome holiday home eh? I wonder what it would cost to convert it and get power online, etc. Just daydreaming here...

| | | Excellent shots! I wonder if the R2D2 thing is some sort of gyro. Looks like whatever it was, the upper part was designed to remain level.

| | | Hey, thanks for the kind words everyone. I'll put up some more, I just have to blur a few faces. Most of the rest of my photos have people in them. I'll be posting up some of the abandoned house as well. It's one of those things I could not even believe anyone would abandon. I'd kill to live in a place like that, but apparently the current owner doesn't agree with me. In fact, my best friend lived there for a few years when he was a kid. I'll work on that tonight. Thanks again, guys. And yes, they were as much fun to take as you think...

| | | WOW! What an amazing find! Thanks *so* much for posting these photos. unfortunately living around the Canadian Great Lakes means there isnt as much cool stuff here. We did have a freighter beach but they cut her down to the waterline about 30yrs ago. We do have some cool underwater ships to explore though.

| | | Yes, the R2D2-like thingy looks like a primitive gyro-compass. I love the springs around the top part - they look like they belong in a mattress!

| | | Very cool! Marine UE seems way underdone. I love how nice and clear the water looks there, that would be a great ue. If you can post hi res pics of that box that says сигнал, i'd be happy to try and translate the stuff.
