| | | a little clarification on the blade issue: if the blade is over a certain length (set by your state, a number even most cops don't know, figure 3.5 inches to be safe) then you cannot carry it legally in a pocket. it counts as carrying a concealed weapon. if it has a blade longer than 3.5 inches, or the blade is fixed(non-folding) you have to carry it in plain sight on a belt sheath/scabbard or the like (i carry my wave and flashlight in a belt holder at all times anyway). if the blade length is under 3.5 inches/your states length, then you can carry it in a pocket. if you're unsure of the length for your state, i would suggest google, or maybe somebody at a knife/sporting goods store would know. hope that helps. -Mr.C EDIT: spelling [last edit 4/12/2006 12:48 AM by Mr.Coffee - edited 2 times]

| | | How inglorious. Utah doesn't have a "minimum length" law. http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/ut.txt Utah - Offenses Against Public Health and Safety - 76-10-504. Carrying concealed dangerous weapon. (1) Any person... carrying a concealed dangerous weapon... is guilty of a class B misdemeanor. - 76-10-501... Definitions... (2)... (c) "Dangerous weapon" means an item that in the manner of its use or intended use is capable of causing death or serious bodily injury. The following factors shall be used in determining whether an item, object, or thing not commonly known as a dangerous weapon is a dangerous weapon: (i) the character of the instrument, object, or thing; (ii) the character of the wound produced, if any; and (iii) the manner in which the instrument, object, or thing was used.

Good one. As for this shit:
Post by Lexi I have a bit of a rule on knives: Short enough to be legal, long enough to be lethal.
|
...all I can say is Whiskey Tango Foxtrot? Do you plan on expecting the unexpected? Um...I mean, do you actually intend to use your cute little knifie-poo as a lethal lethal weapon? Stab someone in the fucking eye to ensure your escape from a location? Jesus Christ, people. Get. Over. This. Shit. about carrying weapons.

| | | I don't know, I just don't give a shit. But a girl out on her own..... Maybe a better plan is safety in numbers. But if on your own, it might not be a bad idea. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Juggslayer found a good use for one in Detroilet during an attempted mugging. But if you have it you better know how to use it and be willing to use it, or it might get taken away from you. But this can usually be avoided by knowing where you are. I've never come across a situation that needed a weapon, but know a small handful that by chance have. FYI If you're really that worried, people don't fuck with German Shepards, and they make great exploring buddies. They just suck at climbing ladders.
I drink gasoline for breakfeast and beer for dinner! Any problem can be licked with a case of beer and a few sticks of dynamite. Strategic Beer Command ruling the desert since 1995 http://www.strategic-beer-command.com |

| | | wow. a simple question about gear erupts into a debate regarding the second amendment! ha ha it was entertaining though. BlueValk forgot to put respirators/dust masks on his list. but we carry those. especially in a place like Geneva. but you never know what types of sinister toxic mold are growing in old buildings. so i think its a good thing to have in your bag

| | | Last time I looked (I'm too lazy now), Colorado Revised Statues read that the knife blade couldn't be double sided and longer than 2 inches. I don't know about any of the other states if they have their laws posted online and updated on a regular basis.

Ain't that the truth. I heard in Ogden you can still use scalps, rape, and crack rock as currency.

| | | I wouldn't carry a knife or any weapons unless you know what your doing. Theres a good chance someone will pull out a bigger knife, or take your knife away from you and use it against you.
Pepper spray is a much better option. (Woah, why didn't I think of that before). Apparently if a persons on crack or some crazy drugs, they might not feel pain, so beating or maybe even stabbing wont have a big effect on a crazy drugged up psycho, however I heard that good pepper spray will work on someone in that cituation. It hurts, and basically stops the person from being able to breath very well. I bought my ex gf some pepper spray (when i was going out with her of course) and she left it lying around, her sister found it didn't know what it was... she accidently sprayed it in the house. She lived in an Apartment type building. The neighbors in the other appartments were coughing :p
I'm paranoid going around with a 2000 dollar camera around my neck, to a criminal, its probably like im saying 'mug me mug me'. I think I might get some pepper spray. The cops took away my last one, because I threatened my sister with it heh, I wasn't going to use it! :p But it should be legal to use, as long as you dont threaten people with it, or spray people randomly lol. You can get them at camping stores, some are called Bear Repellents or something.

Backpacks that hold a bladder are rather nice.. Wearing both sucks alot..
|
they are nice. i picked up a high sierra 6872 (use google) for really cheap. it's a rather narrow bag, but that's good, because my old bag was rather wide and kept getting hung up when i'd climb stuff. for that matter, i've tried hard to not even need the backpack... only on bigger trips, anymore. camera (on a neck strap) tripod (on a back strap) headlamp (on head) minimag (pocket / loaner / backup light) xenon (2xCR123 tac light, in hand) 40oz of malt liquor (haffenreffer private stock, other hand)

| | | I always carry my extendable baton when UEing. If I encounter someone who is being aggressive, a quick wrist snap and I've got 18" of hardened steel that is threatening but not the way a knife is threatening. Plus mace or pepper spray can drift back into your face.

| | | Violence begets violence. If you pull out some baton or little knife, the odds of you getting out are way slimmer than if you a) exercise some common sense/respect b) hightail it out of there All we're doing is exploring...no need to escalate the situation. Besides, what are the cops gonna say if you get busted, and they frisk you and find a knife or baton? Goooooodbye credibility.

| | | What's wrong with people these days? I am in no way prepared to stab or beat someone, and if you are, then, well that's an issue for you and your psychologist. Whether you intend to use a weapon you bring or not, means diddlyfuck to another person. Maybe people are to fat these days to run away fast enough...
