2 way radios?

So.. I'm sure this has been hashed to death, but who carries 2 way radios when UEing? Which ones do you use?

I picked up some cheap Motorola FV200's today - one of them completely died 30 minutes after buying it. The display went blank and it got stuck in transmit until I pulled the batteries, now it doesn't do anything at all Thinking of returning all 4 and getting something else, but $20/pair...

I've been using two way radios since before the forum started (and at the start people said it was stupid, pfftt). I found some audiovox ones at walmart (yes, i know, walmart, yuck) but they were $42 canadian for 2 radios, base for charging, all the nimh batteries for both and a headset/mic for both. To buy headsets alone costs around $30 each... And they have a 9 km range, i'm quite pleased...

In the states they were around $32 - $36 I believe, but I think that model is being discontinued at walmarts, look around.

It requires wisdom to understand wisdom: the music is nothing if the audience is deaf.

I think they're a good idea, personally. Most people these days carry cellphones, but a radio comes in handy if you need to communicate quickly. Plus if you fall in water or the like, a radio is a lot cheaper to replace.

I wound up exchanging the dead one today. The package has 2 Motorola 22 channel radios (FV200) for US $19.99, though they run on alkaline batteries and don't come with headsets. They claim 30+ hours out of a set of 3 AAA's though (assuming you don't transmit much).

I'm pretty pleased with them, but headsets would be very nice. Still, it works out to $10 per radio, and I've got 4 total. 5 mile range as well (when lightning strikes of course).

We carry radios as well. They are much easier than taking out a cell phone, dialing the number, waiting for the person to answer, etc.

I do occasionally but they're only shitty FRS radios that couldnt transmit through a godamn piece of bread for the life of them. I need something more powerful. :/

Two way radios work great to keep in contact with outhers in your group but if any serious happened I still prefer the cell phone to be on me so i will carry both if I can.

The biggest problems with 2 ways is that other people can hear what you say. My family used to take some of them to Wal-Mart before the huge coming of cell-phones. We could hear every Wal-Mart employee and thier uncle talking. We actually hear some neat stuff, there is a lot more that goes on there than you think.

Radios get you in touch much faster though - no waiting while the phone rings.

Radios are much better than phones when in a group. Everyone can hear what you say. Try doing a 3 way call in the 0.5 sec it takes to push the tx button on a radio.

hah. I leave my cell phone in the car and take my 2 way, *every time*.

Why? Because when you're inside a thick walled concrete structure, or *underground*, good luck getting a cell signal.

Lower band two way radios get through; not to mention most commercial two way radios have, oh, about TEN TIMES the TX power of a cell phone.

Be warned if you go with him you will need a larger check book and some heavy instruction.
