Today, significant damage was done to the previously untouched north wing of the Kirkbride. I can say with relative certainty now that neither of the wings are going to be saved, and I'm not too hopeful about center main either.

So what did the 'winning' demolition company pay-err, donate to-Christy to convince him to waste $30 million in tax dollars to rip this thing down, instead of preserve / re-purpose it at no expense to tax payers? I used to kind of like the guy before Greystone.

For anyone who hasn't yet seen, the south wing is completely gone and so is a large chunk of the north wing.

And thus, our struggle to save this irreplaceable historic landmark comes to an end.

www.nj.com/morris/...save_old_hosp.html

I want to thank everybody who turned out to our rallies and showed their support online as well. Nobody can say we didn't put up one hell of a fight. Unfortunately this chapter of the state of New Jerseys history is forever over in a tangible sense. However, the building will continue to live on through the photographs that many people on this site have taken, and the memories than can be shared by those who walked the buildings long, spacious halls. Thanks again to everyone who has been following the fight. It's been a fun ride.

My thoughts exactly. I was going to go see what was left of it with a friend on Monday, but he got ordered into work and I had other plans that prevented me from going up on Tuesday or yesterday. I will spend the rest of my life regretting the fact that I never got to see any of it.

Hopefully something will come of them carefully removing the stone facade and pillars. There could at least be something saved. Most are removed as of this weekend:

Same here. Sucks. These places don't last forever. Have to get in when you can.

Nice! I was up there this weekend as well.

I may be mistaken, but I had originally heard that the smaller building was a post office for the complex.

Sucks, it was one helluva place. Does anyone know what the demo company was doing with all the bits and pieces? Was it just going in the ground, or was some of it going to be sold off to be recycled and reused?

Almost everything, including hazardous materials, is just being stuffed back into the ground. It wasn't even ground up at all first. They also carted mixed loads of contaminants and stone to a quarry to dump the excess.
