| | | There are so many near misses but I have moods where I just chickenshit out really fast and bail. So most of them are my fault. The one that wasn't quite so much a thing I didn't get to get at, but a story I never got, was this place out in... Jesus, Goehner? NE? We're putzing along the freeway like we do, and my car started making a super weird noise so I pull over because it almost sounded like I'd popped a flat or something. I hadn't, a little piece of plastic had just come down from a crack in the shielding around a tire so I drove in to the nearest exit to pop it back in place and in the process, we pass this big sign in a dude's yard that says A DREAM DIED HERE. And there's all kinds of weird stuff in behind it, old janky buildings but right away they just didn't look quite like derelict farm facilities. And then we saw a 'saloon' sign above one of them? Park in the gas station across the way, bumble across the road with my two friends, and stand on the shoulder peering. Sure enough, old man comes out. I decided to feel intrepid and went up and asked him about it. Evidently 'because retired people go crazy' (his words), he and his grandkids over the years had built this entire like... frontier village on his property. He gave us a tour. There was a big mud house built by the same process as a local Native American tribe as well; he told us they put these things up in a matter of weeks back in the day when it was the main kind of dwelling but it had taken him and the kids a year. After describing in loving detail all of the different things they'd put together, how they (ostensibly) related to area history, and all the people from the town when it was bigger who used to come out and bring their kids, kids having graduation pictures taken there, all that stuff, he never mentioned that sign. He did say something about us being lucky we came out when we did because developers wanted to put a(nother) gas station on that corner and in a few years it might be gone. Ultimately we didn't ask. It still ranks among one of the strangest encounters we've had while looking for abandoned shit to trespass all over. There are also two brick houses, separately about an hour from my town in different directions, that I have not quite satisfied myself are actually unoccupied. Those are the ones that are sticking me the worst right now. They're both only proximal to busy state highways so I haven't had a good opportunity for a slow drive-by. One day.

I serve as a blank screen on which people of vastly different political stripes project their views.
