| | | First post on UER Anyways I was up at the old radar station today, and noticed a couple of changes. First of which is that all of the road blocks have been removed, allowing vehicles all the way up to the parking lot beside it. Some of the huge concrete blocks just "disappeared" and a lot of them were moved quite a distance, people must have really tried to move those haha. Second of all there's a new hole knocked out on the second floor in the main "atrium" or whatever you would call it. It lets in a very large amount of light, you can even walk on the floor of it with enough light to clearly see the large pieces of rusty metal sticking up at you. One word of advice to new people going in though, SECURE YOUR PHONE! Climbing through the small space can cause it to fall out...and fall through the hole in the floor and down into the pool room below. Trust me, I am not a happy camper. Thankfully my phone landed in a pile of dust and dirt, so the only the screen is damaged. another 3 feet and it would have been lost forever! TL;DR: Road blocks removed and more light coming in from the outside

| | | My husband and I went to the radar station for our first time yesterday. Getting in was perilous, especially for me being only 5 foot 1. We had to climb some makeshift concrete block stairs leading up to the low level roof then step onto another pile of concrete blocks onto a wooden ledge and pull ourselves up through the window/vent opening. The most unnerving part was having to drop down in between the two large holes in the floor! It was really neat, very post apocalyptic looking inside. Some of the graffiti is quite beautiful while some of it is low brow and unattractive. There is roof access in two separate areas. All and all it was a pretty neat experience. I would love to find some more buildings to explore in our area and it would be great so meet some other people who are into this sort of thing to go exploring with.

| | | My first post since 2009 and probably last one for a few years. The Radar holds a soft spot in my heart..... When I was younger, I use to live near by the Beaver Bank Villa, me and my buddies use to go up there the back way(through the cut block) on Friday and Saturday nights and scare the piss out of all the kids inside. Most would come running out and tear away in their car. Also The Herald wrote an article about the UE'ing at the Radar back in 2006-2007? As for history: The PMQ's sat vacant for at least 2 years before they were demoed. The walls were insulated with seaweed. I don't remember any of them being burnt or caught fire, and I feel would of heard or saw it.
The PMQ site was supposed to be redeveloped, but that has not happened yet. http://www.halifax...s/030617ca1022.pdf You couldn't pay me to live their, considering what other former/current federal sites have for soil contamination with carcinogenics. PS: The coolest building that use to be there was the fire hall. It had a tunnel/very large basement underneath it that ran underground way past the above structure of the building. ( I can't find a picture )

| | | i still love going up to the old radar base. i've been there around 16 times and almost every time i go i bring new people and meet new people. i've even made a few friends up there! the last time i was up there i was stupid enough to think that there wasn't much snow on the road... well was i ever wrong. just because there isnt that much snow down in sackville doesn't mean there isn't much at the radar. trying to get my little car through a foot of snow was a task. for anyone that's been up there before, i got my car stuck just after the dirt pile, and couldn't make it up the final hill to the building and had to park at the bottom. planning to go up there again in a couple days, hoping that all this 'heat' has caused the snow to melt... or at least the time has passed that enough people have driven up and packed the snow down some more. Enjoy the following pictures! i've been up there so many times i've brought my big DSLR up and played around with my tripod. i'm looking forward to going and getting pictures of the flooded basement when it's frozen.
above is looking in from the "entry vent".
above is the 'bridge' across the center of the building on the 3rd (top) floor. taken from the very beginning of the ledge, north of the vent on the far side of the building. top floor.
this is a picture taken from the opposite side of the building that you enter from. behind the camera is the ladder to the roof. behind that in another room is the staircase. you might want to look closely at this one! hahaha. ;D --- i have other pictures but they're above the 100kb upload limit, so i wont bother adding them. someday when it's warmer, a friend an i are looking to rent a large portable water pump and pump out the lower floors. supposedly there's 3. we think it'd be cool to be the first one's down there in centuries.. i cant imagine how disgusting it would be though. i imagine that all the metal is rusted to hell but other things might be well preserved... i cant imagine the dead things in it.. birds and animals that might've fallen in and gotten trapped... i noticed that if you stand on the bottom floor directly under the vent, and look north towards the bottom of the staircase, you can see one door frame which i supposed would be to the stairwell (that appears to be cemented over once the building was completed. the cement has a lighter colour... im guessing that the extra was dumped in that small room at the bottom of the stairs.) and if you go as far east as you can, close to one of the staircases down and look NW/W you can see another door frame with a door still intact. anyways! i suppose this is my little addition to the site. i'd really enjoy going out and doing some exploring with someone someday,, i think the radar is one of the coolest places there is in HRM and definitely my place to go with friends when we have nothing to do. (i attempted to upload the remaining photos... they might work, no idea.)

I went out to York Redoubt today, and i'd love to share the photo's but i cant load the page without being a full member.. which sucks. i was also out to Diefenbunker in debert yesterday to meet the new private owner, he was more then willing to give me a tour of the place and let me take some photos. i'm not sure if there's a forum topic for it, but again.. even if there were it'd be locked.. along with the abandoned building that sit's near by.. If anyone would like to help me become a full member,, please feel free to shoot me a private message, i'd really appreciate sharing some of my photos, and perhaps could get a group into Diefenbunker if they were interested. --Andrew

| | | Take a minute and get an account at Imgur. Upload, copy/paste the IMG codes and you're all set. Tbh, I like Imgur better than UER for uploading and sharing to UER. And it'll allow you to reference your images through Imgur and post to other forums, websites, etc.

Imgur does albums. They even provide embed codes for them for blogs, etc. Example here.

| | | Flickr is good, But I find it has a very ugly and confusing layout - Also the fact that it goes through Yahoo. Imgur (which I use) is good too, has a very simple, clean layout. It just goes down every now and again due to hosting so many damn Reddit photos.

| | | ----Just a heads up---- being a consistent visitor of the RCAF radar base, (especially now that i have an offroading vehicle and there's million trails up there) i'll just let everyone know that the police are often around, along with the owner (owner? older man who looks to be in his 40's. drives a silver silverado). with this said, they've all just told us to get lost. --- the fire department showed up one night while we were all hanging up there, and told us that there was a smoke complaint called in and they were just checking things out. told us that the police were on their way and told us to get lost fast... rcmp vehicles were at the bottom of the hill when we were left and just told us that it was private property and to get lost... later on we found that the fire was actually off in the woods down the power line trail. --- we had a couple of those ns trail cops come up on sidebysides one night, telling us to get lost. --- last night, the owner came up and told us that if he saw us up here again he'd be holding us there until the cops showed to give us trespassing fines.
anyways. if anyone wants to go up, it's prob better off to just walk it with no id's,,,
-- oh, and there's nasty ticks up there too.
-- still looking to get full member status, i've discovered another few places on some of my offroading adventures.

| | | Another radar update - main entrance to the radar has been blocked off. (large concrete blocks surrounded by dirt). if you have a small car, you can still get up by squeezing between the telephone pole and blocks. - the owner has been calling the police/fire department for even the slightest bit of smoke in the air from the radar and so if you have a fire, expect them to be there relatively soon.
