RCAF Beaver Bank

Hello all I am new to the forum and I Recently noticed the lack of information behind the RCAF Beaverbank station I know this may have been posted several times but i have a lot of information pertaining to this that I have researched.
So I did post this else where on this site but decided to turn it into a thread, I have no pictures of beaver bank itself now so please submit your own I however have done a lot of research because this place interested me, so here is some info!

If at all you have some information for this or have found that i have missed some or put wrong information on here please feel free to quote it and give the proper information, also contribute pictures of your own from your explorations, the one topic I posted some of this information in has some wicked pictures hopefully he/she shows them!

HISTORY
Started in 1950 this Pinetree line of RADAR stations became multiple, there was a total of 39 built, this specific station was started in 1950 and complete construction and became operational in 1953.
It became obsolete and was deemed redundant for the military so it was shut down in the early 60's, it re-opened in 1970 as a cement factory and lasted till 1980, before it became a cement factory the Bottom two floors where flooded as to avoid the full layout of the building being known, in the late 70's there was a couple of deaths at the factory and the workers became spooked shortly after the factory was closed down, not known if it closed due to the "ghostly incidents" or not, the building has since then remained abandoned, a couple of PMQs were set ablaze in 2003 the fire was not severe and did not receive media attention, follow the fire the PMQs were demolished leaving ghostly skeletons of the past.

Several attempts to demolished the building were failed, this is due to the building being designed to withstand aerial bombing, the surrounding structures how ever succumbed to the fate of being demo'd, for now the building will remain untouched to be reclaimed by nature.

Names it is known by: CFS BEAVERBANK, RCAF STATION BEAVERBANK
CODENAME: Redtape
Purpose: Operational. Home of No. 22 Aircraft and Control Warning Squadron.
Type: Pinetree Line

History of Pinetree Line: In 1951, the Pinetree Radar Line construction commenced as a joint Canada - USA project. Radar early warning stations were placed to counter the Soviet air threat against North America. This later became part of the joint US-Canada North American Air Defence (NORAD) System. Initially the radar stations were fully manual air defence systems with both aircraft control and early warning functions. The stations were organized into geographical sectors. In 1957 there were 39 Pinetree sites.

1950's-1960's: Radar station for Royal Canadian Air Force.
1970's-1980's: Cement factory, basement flooded.
1983: Cement factory closed.
2003: PMQ fire (not well known was tackled quickly damaged a few buildings)
2004: PMQ's demolished.

Main Section = Operations Building, small tower = Radar sites, should be 2 radar units on the ground one was demolished.

The first picture below is what CFS Beaver Bank looked like long ago, this is actually CFS St-Sylvestre in 1957 it is an almost exact replica give or take a few additions added in the 60s, CFS BeaverBank had one more Radar tower.

A bit of history from St-sylvestre: it was opened in 1953 as RCAF Station Ste.-Marie, with the radar functions being run by the No. 206 RCAF Radio Station. This radar unit was later re-named No. 13 Aircraft Control & Warning Squadron. The station itself was re-named RCAF Station St.-Sylvestre, then CFS Station St.-Sylvestre. The station closed in 1964. The only remains of the former station are the guardhouse, recreation hall and the medical building."

To your comment, here is the other thread with Pictures.
http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=94681

Also. In the second last picture you said to the top left is the road you walk in now. I've only ever come in the other road, which would be on the right of that picture. That is the one that comes up from the PMQ area, or up behind the old folks home that is there now. Aka. Mine Drive.

Although I know that other road exists as well. the Mine Dr. is actually completely open right now and you can drive up to the top no problem. I did it in a car and truck on two separate times.

Cheers,

Something that most people don't know is that the flooded area actually goes down two levels. And there's an escape hatch somewhere in the woods surrounding the ops building. I haven't heard of anybody actually finding the escape hatch, but it is there somewheres.

I have heard about this, and it is highly possible, but if there is one it will be cemented over being that the basement is flooded

I don't think I knew that.

There isn't evidence anywhere really of a escape tunnel existing at RCAF Station Beaverbank, Nor at any other early warning radar facility in the pinetree line.

Edit: I'm sure the construction plans may be available at the NS Archives.

Neat place, I'd like to go back and have hours to photograph the insides without the fear of others showing up. One time there were people on the roof throwing rocks as we arrived, they eventually left. Another time people showed up just as we got there.. sort of awkward.
How do you drive right up to it?

We always bump into people there. Some of them have been sketchy. No one has ever had an issue with our presence.

Years ago, and now currently I think, you could drive around the gate, and then through the woods around the gate. I think there may be free access for vehicles now, but could be wrong.

I've just parked near the retirement home place and walked up the long road, never had any problems.

The entrance to the actual thing is harder than ever to get into.. you have to balance on concrete blocks. Next time I go if I ever do I think I'll bring an assist xD

The last time I was there with Nootz, there was a road that led around the main road with the pile of dirt blocking entrance, so we just took that to get around and drove right up. I think that was last spring.

When I was there, I took the next road down that circles around the back of the operations site and up the hill. A little bumpy and doesn't get you ALL the way there, but close enough.

I was last there in September, and you could drive right up to the front door. The road was bumpy but passable in my Honda Civic, meaning most anyone should be able to drive up.

As for the sketchy people you could meet there, I went three times in September to try to get pictures. Twice I had to stop before I was finished because the local teenagers started throwing rocks and debris at me from the upper floors.

I've taken my paintball pistol up with me before, because of rock-throwing kids. Pretty handy indeed. As soon as I put out a warning shot, they got the hell out of Dodge.

Went there last winter in huge snow in hopes of filming a movie, I've got like 30-60 minutes of unedited video. The people I went with couldn't get inside so I only peeked into the stairwell and got freaked out and left. I get chills just looking at these film stills. I should spend some time editing what I have into what it is. Would be nice to get inside footage though. I have lots of photos and video if anyone is interested for whatever reason.

Actually this place freaks the hell out of me now.
