| | | Posted by metawaffle So, specifically on this thread: Until I read Doug's post in the drainers board (Hi, Doug!), I still had no idea who the OP was.
|
Since everyone else was acting like it was obvious, I didn't feel like I had to identify the user for the moderation staff to work out was going on. I was trying to be discrete.
Posted by metawaffle Moderators are just janitorial staff - we rely on our community to alert us when there's a cleanup needed on aisle five... maybe we can return to the heady days of alacritous moderation.
|
For that, y'all would have to start acting like you gave two shits about women-hatred and the rest of the deeply offensive behaviour that is the day-to-day here. Janitors don't wait by the bat-phone for a cry of distress, they come and wash the floors and empty the bins at least once a day. Even all the guys in this thread getting excited about the opportunity to go a couple of rounds with Panic! again should have been shut down before now. Honestly. Posting in Contact a Mod would have been discreet. Posting a pointless, self-indulgent angsty rant is not. And, no, it wasn't obvious - I just banned the guy, and only thanks to Doug.

I agree, this site has far too much misogyny and otherwise offensive content. I did what I could to address it before I had any kind of moderatorial role, and I do so now. It still gets through, and it sucks, but I care, and I make the effort. But, your posturing and hand-wringing is useful, too. If you really want to continue this conversation, and provide positive, constructive suggestions on practical administrative practices, I sincerely invite you to create a thread in Contact a Moderator. The internet is full of forums that contend with balancing content moderation against perceptions of editorialism and censorship, and if you feel you have insights there that are worth sharing, please do so. However, if all you have to say is "it's shit that there's bad stuff on here", then perhaps refrain.

It is great to provide users with a "Contact a Moderator" line; I agree that it would have been appropriate of me to post there in the case of this thread, and I will consider doing so in future.

Yeah, I'm sorry, I can't bring myself to do that. I disagreed deeply with the decision to disappear the old "Forum Issues" forum, and still feel the same way. Issues of forum policy and general behaviour should be discussed transparently, not relegated to a dark hole. Metafilter's "MetaTalk" section is a great example of how this kind of thing is done really positively elsewhere. Of course, their moderators also get paid...
Come now, you weren't born yesterday. Even by tl;dr standards, if I had been ranting it would have had to have been at least three or four times as long.
