| | | Terrell State Hospital was originally a Kirkbride but they've managed to remoldel the Kirkbride out....it's still active but only for long term care. It's listed on the Kirkbride site as demolished, as only a fountain exists.I love the old pictures of it. The new ones mot so much.

| | | So would you say Hudson River was not a Kirkbride since the left wing was never completed? If you want a really unfinished Kirkbride look at Austin, Texas. http://www.asylump...n_SH_Aerial_01.jpg

I took the info from the kirkbride site. And according to the website about the hospital/prison someone else designed it The Asylum for Insane Criminals opened at this site in 1892 and took the name Matteawan State Hospital the following year. New York State architect Isaac Perry, known for finishing work on the New York State Capitol, designed the main hospital building at Matteawan. The Female wing was completed at Hudson. They never planned on making it as long as the original design....

The architect disagrees with you. http://www.asylump...es/d/df/Hudson.jpg They meant to complete it, they just ran out of money.

| | | If they really wanted to extend the wing, they would have done that instead of building tons of other buildings on campus. They had money. When It was first being built the Residents of NY were really pissed off that it was over budget, but they never wanted them to stop building.

No, they ran out of money. By the time money was available again the kirkbride plan had fallen out of favor, so new buildings were built on the cottage plan. It would make absolutely no sense to make one wing shorter than the other, especially the female wing. Female patient populations were at least equal, though often larger than the male populations of hospitals.

"This Kirkbride is somewhat unique in that one wing is shorter than the other. While some Kirkbride buildings have lost parts of wings to demolition, in the case of Hudson River this feature was planned before construction was finished. Apparently there was an expectation of fewer female patients than male patients (the Kirkbride Plan stipulated that each sex be housed in its own wing), and despite the asymmetry, the building is considered complete."
