| | | Posted by digital_me False. Do not kid yourself. Research what people have done for other drain SRT setups. If you can't recognize that this is a bad idea, you shouldn't be doing it.
|
Posted by H4wXx We'll have to make sure we can get back up if we go down, lol. I figure securing a rope with some ladder loops in it should be good enough though.
aha ha that's why you get yourself a rope ladder with wooden rungs and something sturdy to tie it to and to why the fuck would anyone wanna go down a drop off anyways...?

It's a good general assumption to make when someone asks about rope work on a forum. It's nothing personal, you just tend to see a large number of threads with people asking the same thing (more or less). If you knew how to do it, you would've done it already. And about the gases, if you smell H2S, get out. If you notice signs of oxygen deprivation, get out. If you get seriously into exploring tunnels, a simple O2 meter might be a decent investment. Find one that's easy to calibrate. Buy it from ebay. Don't bother with respirators in drains, they won't do anything useful for you.

| | | It sounds more like it's just sewer gas, which contains H2S. An NP100 or similar cart won't help you out much since it is really only scrubbing and keeping certain things out, and lets air pass though. There are some P100 carts rated for H2S escape, which means it is only going to work for a very short time and you will want to replace said cartridges immediately. If there is enough H2S in your body it prevents cellular respiration. You may start coughing and become dizzy. Hence the potential need for SCBA in certain situations. While H2S is dangerous at low concentrations, in professional situations health regulations often require very low alerting thresholds of 10-15ppm, but it's not really dangerous until the low hundreds of ppm. However, it would be worthwhile to consider the overall symptoms of sewer gas which is not purely composed of H2S. I'll just paste this from wiki: "Sewer gas often has a “rotten egg” smell due to the hydrogen sulfide content, which can be detected by human olfactory senses in concentrations as low as parts per billion. Exposure to low levels of this chemical can irritate the eyes, cause a cough or sore throat, shortness of breath, and fluid accumulation in the lungs. Prolonged low-level exposure may cause fatigue, pneumonia, loss of appetite, headaches, irritability, poor memory, and dizziness. High concentrations of hydrogen sulfide (>150 ppm) can produce olfactory fatigue, whereby the scent becomes undetectable. At very high concentrations (>300 ppm), hydrogen sulfide can cause loss of consciousness and death. See main article, Hydrogen sulfide." [last edit 6/2/2010 5:05 AM by Matteo - edited 1 times]

I can understand your reasoning and appreciate it, I was also in a bad mood so it wasn't just you. As for your last sentence, it's a little unreasonable to assume that just because someone knows how to do something they would have already done it ;). Life's full of variables and we're not all the same so don't assume so much, it might help you out in life.
