Bunkers

UA City World MapThe bunkers at Chowder bay were a paradise to urban explorers. There are no less than five completely separate bunkers in the area that are on publicly accessible land. Most often these bunkers are closed to the public, but in early year 2000 they were open for the filming of an episode of a TV show. I turned up there to explore, after having gone the week before when everything was locked. The National Parks and Wildlife staff had opened up some of the bunkers for the film crew, including the big black topped one.

I was walking up exploring it when this guy asked me what I was doing. I explained I was just taking photos because the bunkers were normally closed. Turned out he was part of the film crew and was scouting shooting locations. I suggested a few good areas to shoot scenes then wandered off to take more photos. I came across the NPWS bloke who was waiting for the film crew to finish up for the day. I explained that I was interested in the historical structures here and to my delight he actually opened up two of them that were locked so I could take photos. Goes to show what a politely put request to see into stuff can do

I do not recommend you try enter any bunkers that are not open to the public. As I had plenty of space on the digital camera, portable lighting, no time constraints and free access I have documented these bunkers extremely well, to the point that you will almost see them better here than in person.
