Bunkers

Small Bunker 1

UA City World MapThis was the first bunker I actually went into. I was amazed, there it was, open to me. I ran back to my car to get my flashlight to explore this bunker. It was not big, but it was so beautiful, hidden away in the jungle. It was not that big. When I got into it I could hear an eerie sound of a low whistle. This turned out to be the sound of wind blowing out a small gap from a tidal generator below part of the bunker.

Part of buildings on top of the bunker. This featured in an episode of Water Rats as a homless woman's abode.

I spotted this vent just before I saw the entrance below

This scene amazed me, the jungle, the ferns, the path leading onwards to the tower and the entrance of the bunker.

And it was open!

A short curve lead into the bunker itself

It turned out to be an old machine gun post

THe view through the hole was limited to a small patch of jungle

In the centre of this image is the hole into the tidal generator

Looking back down the passage

The tower

Just on from the first small bunker the passage continued to a clearing with another two bunkers to the left, and a huge watch tower on the right. I could not resist climbing the tower which was unlocked. The view was great, right across the harbour to the Heads.

The tower looms through the jungle

Looking like a relic from a forgotten age or perhaps an Easter Island statue the tower rears from the jungle

The huge face of the tower, pitted and weather worn

The way up was still solid

First floor

View from the top. From here it is possible to see right across the bay.

A great spot for bunkers, you could blow up all the ferry traffic

View down to the gun emplacement of bunkers 2 and 3
