they probably do it to remove the crap that slowly accumulate in the canal

not long before they re opened the canal, I remember they had drained it, and you could see a few old cars that had been dumped, old motorcycles, old fridges and such. people use it as a dump.

i know in the spring, and somtimes fall (fall 2004) they drain it for maintenance on the locks

And they make sure to leave enough water so the turttles (they are 10 so far) and fish are not disturbed.(I was worried so I asked if there was an "agent de la faune " and yes there is..)And they leave most of the trash..= hotels for some species.

the problem when they do drain it is that a good part of the water in the lachine cote st paul section is HOT water comming from some o fthe still active industries and also salt water from the 2 snow dumps on the side, not the best arrangement
