  Back in those days, it was not all that uncommon for people to work for one employer all their working life. In that sense, they were like family.

  And it was an intense period of gloom during the war, something us who came after will never (hopefully) know. It was a time of sticking together or go insane! So no wonder the late 40's and 50's was a time almost utopian optimism!
