Description
The cell's bars. Pulled off from the wall. This doesn't require super-human strength as the steel frame isn't actually bolted to the walls, floor or ceiling.

It's not a real cell. 'What the f*ck', 'What kind of school is this', and other questions came to mind when I saw this. FYI, no, it's not standard practice to put students behind bars in Greece. :-) It's probably the other way round (I understand teachers aren't even allowed to tell students off for misbehaving).

I'm assuming this is a film set of some sort because of the dismantled fake cardboard/plasterboard walls I found near the entrance. Plasterboard is NOT a building material in Greece because of all the earthquakes. All walls are load bearing. Also because of the fake urinal in the back, the fact that the cell door was much newer than the rest of the school and was never actually bolted to the walls, just wedged there. Also the porn on the walls. Sure, this is Europe, but my school frowned on porn and I bet this one did too. Oh, and there were construction materials lying about too.

  I assumed as much when I saw the next couple of pictures;
But when you say " all walls are load bearing so no plasterboard is used; "
In the US walls that bear loads and those that do not can still be covered with sheetrock.
So does that mean that a petition cannot be built in a public building because it does not technically "bear a load"
I'm not questioning your knowledge, I'm just curious as to what the building restrictions are like in an earthquake prone area.
Ex.: the original floorplans must include ALL load bearing walls, but any further petitioning is OK?
Interesting.
You're right about the fake wall; that would be movie set material; tape a piece of sheetrock to the cieling and floor, and you've got a new "wall"!

That's a good question, actually! I believe I've seen partition walls, but they're very very rare. Maybe two or three in all. I suppose there's no law against partition walls as part of building alterations, as long as brick or concrete walls aren't compromised in the process. So yes, your assumption is probably 100% right. Anyway, I'm the black sheep in a family of architects and civil engineers (great heritage for an urban explorer!) so I might ask about this and why it's so unusual. :)

I can tell you the laws and standards for quake-proof buildings are extremely rigid, and are updated every year. They lead to a somewhat unusual building style, even in cities: stout-looking buildings built around bizarrely-reinforced concrete frames, deep foundations and not too many sublevels. And the designs are stress-tested by computer simulation for flexibility (apparently, quake-proof means flexible, not rigid). In comparison, fire regulations are more relaxed as almost none of the building materials are inflammable.

It seems urban exploration is a completely different animal depending on the country you're exploring.

I'd love to shoot there with a model. In fact, I'm going to suggest just that to someone who wants to model for me. I don't think she's that adventurous though.

Tell her about the great Scottish fertility symbol.

That should get her going!

I would, but they buggered up the cell. Was there again in May, and it'd been vandalised (most of the porn gone, too).

ahhh, who the hell puts a jail in school. i kno, the smart ones do.
Posted by SoupMeister 9/10/2005 10:55 PM | remove
It's symbolic. A school IS a jail (or at least mine was, with its contentration camp-like fences). Glad *THAT'S* over.

that reminds me of a t-shirt a friend once had, it was a cartoon with two people talking to one another:

A: Why are we building another prison?
B: This is a high school....
