Yeah, I think you and I were discussing that maybe it increased the surface area. Something like that. I'm open to suggestions from people who know about these things.

  One of the best places for industrial "what ifs?" is the National lead mine. Almost everything is "what the hell is that for?" I tried to look up mine tech online, but the problem is that the buildings are specifically built for the location and special mineral requirements.

  "agitator" of some sort to remove coal ash? I can see those panels vibrating thus allowing a controlled release of coal dust.

  if its inside the boiler/furnace itself, that picture reminds me of flame banks (not sure of the technical term if there even is one)... i'm probably wrong, but that's just what it kinda looks like.
