History
Amsterdam used to be a very prosperous mill town due to its location along the Mohawk River. In fact, according a local, the town used to have the highest number of millionaires per capita of any U.S. city. As with most U.S. manufacturing towns, though, it seems to have fallen on hard times. Many of the mills lie dormant now, some are partially used for office space, while others are falling apart.
