The entire time I lived in PA, I had no idea we had rattlesnakes! Scary. Great pics, btw.

we have them in one spot here in the Adirondacks of NY... Tongue Mountain on the west side of Lake George, Warren County.

Thanks! I had no idea they were in PA either, but then an old timer told me they are in some counties but not others. Scary thing is: I came across this guy when I was just walking around, not paying attention. Its a 13 mile bike ride from this spot back to the car, so if you get bit, you're sol.

Looks like an Eastern Massisauga, they are dotted throughout the northeast, they have a really specific habitat though.

Both right. It is an Eastern Massasauga, which is a sub-species of Rattlesnake that reigns from Mexico to Ontario. It has been decades since one was noted in WI, so I doubt they are still in Ontario either. It WILL eff you up, but it is not aggressive. Most bites are from handling or accidentally stepping on one.
