TOILETTES! TOILETTES! TOILETTES!!!!!!!!!! From City of Montreal docs :
"À Montréal, sous le mandat de Camilien Houde, on érigea plusieurs vespasiennes dans les parcs et places de la ville et la terminologie populaire référait alors aux "Camiliennes". En 1913, des vespasiennes sont notamment inaugurées à la place Jacques-Cartier, sous la colonne Nelson."

i was always impressed by the girth of nelsons shaft
Posted by maZe 12/22/2007 3:37 PM | remove
Actually this shaft is quite small if you compare it to the original in London. It's kinda a mini-me of Nelson's shaft really. (It's in Trafalgar Square in London)

In the early 70's I partied many times at the Nelson. I can't remember which building on the right was the Iroquois Hotel but it was fun too. ah yes those late party nights hoping to get lucky and all we ever got was a great view of Nelson's Shaft!

Posted by Charlie_Dunver 1/8/2008 5:26 AM | remove

i wonder if nelson would be happy to hear all these men discussing his shaft

Two other interesting things about Nelson's Shaft. 1)urban legend says that the french workers that built the Nelson Column (for the British) actually built it with the top border larger than it should be so the closer you are to it, the less you can actually see Nelson. It was their way to seek revenge for the British Conquest.
2)Nelson (from the top of his column) is directly starring at Vauquelin, a French combattant that is seen defending the French ship fleets. This was supposedly planned to represent then again that the French were defiant even after the British Conquest.

maze i wonder what it would be like to have a shaft that was considerably larger at the top than the rest
Posted by Samurai 1/12/2008 8:28 AM | remove
  odd

Posted by Charlie_Dunver 1/12/2008 10:52 PM | remove
Ah so the closer they get the less likely to see the smile on your face?

ok i know now why they got rid of the washrooms... they didn't want the skateboarders at the fountain at the top of the hill to be tempted to roll down there and use the entrances as jumps.

Hah hah! I'm pretty sure Drapeau got rid of them because the homos were getting out of hand. Which was a really stupid move. He should've just hired some attendants.

lolll Most public toilets (although I don't have the exact date of this one yet) closed down for good in 1979. Which makes it interesting that I remember my grand-parents taking me into some since I would have been less than 3 years old back then. Yet I have clear memories of going to the Camiliennes at Place d'armes with my old folks...
