  From my understanding, manganese is iron oxide, right? So it would all be iron of some grade.

  iron oxide is rust... there are various grades of iron ore...

  I must have been thinking of hematite, which is iron oxide and was mined along with manganese in this area. This source also shows iron as being produced along with manganese: http://tin.er.usgs...php?labno=10261867
