Paper isn't whitened, per se... it's called a bleaching process... basically your brown pulp (at our mill) goes into one brown stock washer where the black liquor is washed out of it, then on to a 2nd brown stock washer. From there, it goes through a series of screens (hardwood or softwood... they have different screens) and then on to the deckers. From the deckers, the pulp goes to the first tower (#10), where it gets zapped with chlorine dioxide, which starts the bleaching process... the pulp goes into #15 washer, then out to #20 tower where it gets hit with more caustic, then back into 25 washer and then into #30 tower, more ClO2 then 35 washer, out to 40 tower (caustic) 45 washer, 50 tower (this is where our own 'secret sauce' and hydrogen peroxide get added) and then to 55 washer... from 55 washer, the pulp (which is uber bright white now) goes to either #7 or #10 silo (hardwood) or #9 silo (softwood). #8 silo is a swing silo which contains both hardwood and softwood. working in the wet end or back end of a paper mill is just like working in a chemical plant.
