Hand laid rock lined with concrete. My guess would be 1,200 gallons or so. Built well enough that there is still about 100 gallons of water in the bottom.

there has to be an underground water source there somewhere, with the NM heat in the summer, I have a hard time imagining that it wouldn't have evaporated of the decades

True enough about the evaporation. However, when it rains here, it rains like crazy for a half an hour. Pools can reach 4 inches in no time, and some of it runs into the cistern. Very uncommon out here to run into a cistern that is bone dry. Little survival tip for ya there!
