  on a derailment it is preferable to just switch switches than waste time waiting for those extra long ties seeing as most nearby yards won t have them in stock.

  exactly, they can lay massive amounts of track now with welded rail in a day the panel switches make that even easier since switches have to be handlaid, so panel track them and deliver them to the site, saves a lot of time

  In the late 70's they used to say that when the CP main line was down it was costing them $10,000 an hour. That adds up pretty quick so short cuts are essential.

  yeah, take a look at the CP bridge, the better of the 2 tracks is still out of order from the derailment. it was the one upgraded to welded rail. they predict august for it to be back online
