Established in 1914, the Royal Ontario Museum has a collection of over 6 million items. It houses a collection of 150, 000 fossils from the Burgess Shale. The Michael Lee-Chin Crystal is an addition that doesn't actually touch the sides of the old museum, but is built around it like an envelope. The roof is spectacular, with a gorgeous "UofT" view of the city, along with a giant metal roof to climb around on.

At the turn of the 20th century, a small group of Torontonians envisioned a museum in the city of international stature. The Royal Ontario Museum was formally created by the signing of the ROM Act in the Ontario Legislature on April 16, 1912. The original historic building originally housed five separate museums: the Royal Ontario Museums of Archaeology, Palaeontology, Mineralogy, Zoology, and Geology. The first addition took place during the Great Depression and an effort was made to use mostly local building materials. Excavation was done by hand, using picks, shovels, and horse-drawn wagons. On October 12, 1933, Toronto newspapers reported that a newly opened wing facing Queen’s Park was a “masterpiece of architecture”. In 1955, the five museums were reorganized as a single body and in 1968, the ROM was formally divided from the University of Toronto and became a separate entity under the provincial government. The most recent extension built on June 3rd, 2007, is the well known Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. Despite being advertised as a symbol of Toronto's 21st century innovation, it's acceptance among the public is quite controversial. The ROM is currently undergoing restoration.

The McLaughlin Planetarium is the building directly south of the ROM. Early in 2009, the ROM announced that it had sold the building and site to the University of Toronto, which plans to demolish the existing building to make way for additional facilities. In September 2014, the university announced preliminary plans for new facilities to be built on the site. No demolishing has proceeded, however it will probably happen soon enough.
