Not a rice gin the Rice gin. This was a cotton gin in a large corrugated steel building on a steel frame of roughly 3000 square feet not including various attached sheds and warehouses. Some of the cotton ginning equipment and associated conveyors and duct work are still present. This was a Lummus ginning system.

There were several cotton gins in and around Rice. This one may or may not have been the one owned by town founder and namesake W.M. Rice. If it was I hope they will at least try to preserve it. Its unusual to find these old gins with the machinery intact. This one has most of the equipment left but it hasnt been in operation for a long time. I wonder if this was because several people kept getting their arms cut off while working here! See included story. Cotton gins were not really safe or OSHA compliant in 1890 or 1920 or even 1960. Besides pullies, belts, chains, sprockets and high speed saw blades to get tangled up with they generated a lot of waste that had to be disposed of by burning. Nearby were two old incinerators. They were probably used to burn cotton seeds, husks and lint. They have recently been demolished along with several other old buildings in the former industrial district of Rice. When farmers begin using pesticides on a large scale the cotton production increased but the toxicity levels did too. This contamination tended to wind up in the soil and water around these old sites. This gin was all grown over with brush and was being used to store junk when I saw it in 2005. It looks like the town is trying to clean things up around here now so its status could change at any time. June 2018 edit: Satellite views show its gone
