The 434 acre mill site takes up almost the entire coastline of Fort Bragg including Soldier Bay. The land had been substantially denuded, trashed and rumored to need much environmental remediation and was off limits to the local citizens. The GP mill site is almost one-third of the city size of Fort Bragg and holds the scenic coast land so that some say, "Fort Bragg is a coastal town that doesn’t know it has a coast."

Several large buildings to explore, including an upstairs area that is interesting. Good site for night photography, but coastal fog is common (which blocks the moon). Active demolition as of July 2013. :( No security that we saw.

The site is a former redwood timberlands and sawmills that was shut down in 2002 and has been identified as a nonperforming asset by Georgia Pacific. The GP land site had been a military base, Indian Reservation, and successive lumber mill sites for close to 150 years. In a $21 billion transaction in 2005, Georgia-Pacific was acquired by Koch Industries and became a privately held, wholly owned subsidiary, continuing to operate from its Atlanta headquarters.

Possibilities: a new neighborhood at the north end, an improved wastewater facility using a living marsh, light industry (such as a mill for the Krenov Fine Furniture program at College of the Redwoods), a marine biology lab, a big town square, a seaside park, a golf course, a college.
